. >> this was the view from the north end of lake tahoe. it was beautiful and serene, looking out over the water, but look a little further there and you can see that hazy orange sky. there are no evacuation orders or warnings for north lake tahoe. we want to check in with mike nicco for a look at conditions there. mike: let's take a look at what's going on as far as the red flag warning and how long it is going to last. until 11:00 this evening. those embers have been shooting anywhere from a half mile, three quarters, to even a mile downwind and spreading the fire. here's a look at the current conditions. but you can see by 7:00 we are already up to 13. it starts to get more dangerous around 10:30. the most dangerous time will be around 4:00. that will last, those 20 mile-per-hour winds, through 6:30. they will back down during the overnight hours. we do have winds that are going to be erratic over the fire due to the terrain. you know fire can create its own weather. reggie? reggie: battling calif calif wildfires, calfire says a 16-member

evacuees are looking for a place to stay to wait it out in south lake tahoe and north lake tahoe. restaurants and businesses in tahoe city are temporarily closed even though they are not in the path of the fire. many hotels have closed because they don't have enough staff to help them stay open. so as we approach labor day weekend. a lot of concerns out here in the lake tahoe area. potential tourists being told to stay away until things get under control. back for you. >> all right. let's go to meteorologist kari hall tracking those changing conditions, and we with were heartened to hear that things would be a little bit easier for firefighters. is that going to stay true? >> yeah. we're looking at winds coming down and so that's going to help improve the forward movement of the fire. it's not going to move as quickly as it was, but, unfortunately, as the winds calm down we also get lower visibility because the smoke is not moving. we have an active network of fire-sensing sights here and we we have yellow dots it indicates that the fire has already moved through. the red dots ind

north. but these are the homes here in south lake tahoe and those homes so far have been protected kirkwood down here. they're making that a focus and highway 88. they're trying to keep the fire on the north side of highway 88. they don't want to jump highway fit the highway 88 like it did highway 50 an update to an evaccation order for douglas county. that is just over the nevada state line here. lot of vacation homes there. the evacuation order tonight was lifted for round hill region as well as roads, including lower elks point. so good news for folks who can now return to their homes if they feel comfortable doing so right now to our 4 zone forecast as we get an idea what the conditions are out there. >> our current first chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with what we can expect yeah. really catching a break out there. these past 24 hours member not too long ago we were talking about red flag warnings gusty winds 2030 miles per hour. those are really backed off and that has given firefighters a chance to really trying camp out around many of those homes in those residentia

and where we are seeing those winds coming from around the vicinity of myers and south lake tahoe is out of the north direction you want to see because it's going to start to push fan. those flames away from areas like myers in south lake tahoe. we replaced a southwesterly wind with the northerly wind. and it's a very, very calm wind at that. so overwhelmingly good conditions this morning. at least compared to where we had been. it's nice to share some good news with you up there and you know fire crews up there just nonstop trying to get things under control in these areas. as for our with gusts, even less impressive kirkwood, 4 mile per hour wind gust 7 miles per hour. at times, not looking at a windy morning in the least bit. now, as far as smoke goes, we have settled back with some haze out there for sure. it's not an overwhelmingly smoky forecast for us. obviously the worst impact of that is across the very northern tier. the state. but we will have a hazy weekend ahead. severe respiratory conditions. maybe not the best one for a long hike or something like that. limit outdoor exposure. if you k

lake tahoe right here. you see the southern tip of the lake and the fire is charging to the north and to the east in this direction. the winds have been blowing it that way. and as we zoom in a bit. this is where the stand is being made protecting all of these homes in south lake here along highway 89 new of christmas valley. you have pockets of heat. certainly. but you do not areas where homes have been lost. crews have been working obviously over time through the night to do that. and if you back it up a little pedal to the west a bit. you can see, you know, the inner portion of this fire is obviously less intense. the fire started over here and the grizzly flats area. they are that 2 weeks ago. now and it has been burning to the east and to the south a bit and you can see where the hottest parts of the fire are right now kirkwood has then save so far they're running the snowblowers or the snow making machines there which are pumping out water this is the evacuation map which hadn't changed for a few days. but did change late today. good news from the eldorado sheriff's office which downgraded evacuation orders.

crews were able to successfully keep this fire out of south lake tahoe thus far. evacuees in north camino and pollack pines have been downgraded to evacuation warnings. governor newsom visiting the burn area saying protecting california and battling the caldor fire is the state's top priority. he commended those living in the community for the swift evacuation. >> my heart goes out, the anxiety of not knowing for those who have lost their homes. homes can be rebuilt. people's lives can never be brought back. >> a lot of evacuees are staying in hotels and casinos right there on the state line, and some of them are being asked to evacuate again. the mont blue resort says now all the rooms are reserved for firefighters and essential workers. we watched this, look at this, as dozens of evacuees packed up their cars and headed out of town again. among them, a man loading up his limo with three dogs and two parrots. >> i've been asked five times since i pulled this thing up to get people out, but i can't. >> i've seen an old couple standing by the window with sadness in their eye and a t

nevada that have resulted in the caldor fire growing so rapidly to the north and east and threatening areas like south lake tahoeis morning. areas just above lake level are looking at a breezy us of conditions. it's common really cool along the lakeshore this morning. but as we start to see the sunrise. you're going to start to see some mixing occurring and that's going to accelerate winds at lower elevations and that is also going to likely result in some erratic fire behavior and crews out there today are going to try to be on top of that as much as possible. obviously we do have red flag warning staying in effect until 11:00pm tonight. winds gusting as high as 25 to 35 miles per hour. very dry. southwesterly winds too. the same winds here in the bay area of helped us out its first air quality goes in today even better day air quality wise than yesterday with good conditions to start your day across the bay area. current temperatures will their cool in the 50's and 40's later on today. it actually stays pretty cool. it's only 60's and 70's for most of us 60's at the coastline. 70's along both the bayshore as w

wildfires burning including the caldor fire which continues its approach towards south lake tahoe as it moves to the north we have an inversion set up on the lake and that means you're only in the 30's along the lakeshore. once you head up into the slopes above the lake here in the 60's. so temperatures vary, widely winds, very widely around the fire to and that does make firefighting conditions more difficult, especially towards those dawn hours as those layer start to mix together and we can see some erratic winds forming winds today. a 25 to 35 miles per hour up in the sierra nevada. and that is prompting a continuation of this red flag warning through 11:00pm tonight, those same winds here in the bay area had a positive impact on us mostly in the form of cooler temperatures and better air this morning. almost all of us are starting off with green. good conditions. temperatures today are also going to be some of our coolest 60's and 70's across almost all the bay area, half moon bay at 67 burlingame at 71 today. foster city also at 71 with redwood city and san carlos at 75 south bay numbers mostly in t

lake tahoe. more out of the north and even making its way to the northeast. and with that it is heading right towards us in the bay area. but we are tracking better sky conditions for those of you at south lake tahoe. i 80 at donner summit. but our air quality here, all that smoke and ash is getting pushed into our area because of wind directions out of the southeast for us. so that's why we're noticing the winds flowing into the east bay valleys in north bay valleys can't really tell much of a difference in the san francisco peninsula. but that smoke and haze certainly out there. we're not tracking that cool sea breeze pushing that smoke and ash away like we were yesterday and the day before yesterday that brought us the cooler weather. but fortunately, though, for south lake tahoe tracking slightly cooler temperatures still below average in the mid 70's until you gradually start to warm up calmer winds throughout this year expected this weekend and if that smoke and haze continues. it could hover and linger over this year this weekend. so keep that in mind f

so the extremely aggressive fire fight right there just to the north of meyers to keep this fire out of south lake tahoealso, the heavenly ski area and all the communities really seemed like it paid off. by putting that firefighting effort there, they help to keep those flames and shift the way it was sxhoofg move it to the east. it still has destroyed loot. it is still burning. at least we're starting to get out of the winds situation. it looks like the windchills will be. in 10 to 20-mile-per-hour range. the next thing is some hotter weather. upper 80s and low 90s. >> thank you. el dorado county leaders are saying it is safe for some people to return home for now. evacuation orders in north camino and pollock pines fbl downgraded to just an evacuation warning. people have come back home to go to their farms and to restaurants. >> it is really nice to come down the road and have a beer. >> it is terrible. it's heart breaking to see that there are so many people displaced. >> el dorado leaders say when you get home, make sure you have clean running water. i want to show you how much the fire has grown.

gamble winds are also allowing ground crews to strengthen containment lines on the north side of the fire near lake tahoe and a clear vegetation that could fuel spot fires. when you have massive fuel loads, you're feeding the fire, and so it's getting bigger and more intense. so if you can take away that intensity, you could bring the fire down to a manageable level. cal door fire is now 29% contained and good news for many residents, more evacuation orders are being downgraded to warnings. there are reports. sadly though a price gouging in and around the fire zone. some evacuees say that rideshare companies were charging about $1500 to get from the tahoe area to the reno airport. that's eight times the normal rate, and at least one hotel on the nevada side of the lake raised its room rates to $450 a night about four times the normal price. california law forbids price gouging during emergencies. a similar law in nevada won't go into effect until october. well the massive dixie fires 55% contained but the fire continues to spread and limits and lassen counties, the five dot ranch posted video audience to

lake tahoe tonight for us. thank you. >> more say the latest map of the burn area from cal fire to demonstrate just where the fire is burning. it's growing to the north and to the east. it's kind of knocking on south lake tahoe store on the south side. but firefighters say they're not letting it reach the homes there, at least not yet. but you can see it did jump highway 50 down just south of myers and christmas valley. it is burning just south of the residential areas of south lake tahoe kind of toward the heavenly ski resort. but it hasn't got there yet and firefighters trying to keep it that way. here's an infrared heat map that gives you another visual to show you where the blaze is. most intense, the darker, the color, the hotter, the flames in there in the middle with all those little orange dots. that is the the the head of the fire. that's where it's going right now. the burn zone, though, has decreased in the middle of the fire with the heat in the flames. so it is still actively pushing to the northeast. but again, is still staying just south. and we're talking just a few 100 feet in some cases of residential areas of south lake tahoe. >> t
