rain and snow on the approach to the west slope the sierra, headed towards lake tahoe and maureen on the northst near eureka. the main event is the pacific northwest, a cold dorm dropping snow in portland and the oregon coast, dropping her way as we head to tomorrow morning's commute, increasing clouds after midnight, by 9 am we see the showers passing the bay area and rain totals between the morning through the evening should be higher than what we saw today. most of the bay area, one 10th of an inch of rain, and for the santa cruz mountains and east bay hills, few areas could get close to half an inch of rain with rain coming in tomorrow. >>> wind gusts across the north bay, 30 miles per hour, more rain and window lasting from morning to evening on wednesday and tomorrow through friday we have the coast in interbay advisory for the return of the king ties, it a.m.-11 am, around the embarcadero you might see water levels up.>>> on top of that, the biggest storm in terms of potential rain is lurking as we head to the holiday weekend, the totals we're expecting of the forecast in 10 minutes. >>

so, this happened at 9:30 this morning at palisades tahoe on the north western side of the lake. it office an expert run. the run is called kt-22. it just opened for the season today. one man died and just in the past hour the placer county sheriff confirmed the victim is 66-year-old kenith kidd that lived in truckee and marin county. two others injured caught up in the snow >> this happened during a winter storm that is only intensifying. the good news tonight, everyone has been accounted for. [ applause ] >> that is the video of people cheering after a buried skier was pulled out from the snow alive. it was only search and rescue digging and it was all hands on deck with skiers and snowboarders jumping in to help as they can. now, among them was jen, she saw the avalanche from her ski lift. our reporter has the story. >> the bus was like five minutes late. five minutes earlier i would have been in it. that is the part that is freaking me out. >> reporter: jen was on the ski lift when she saw the deadly avalanche at palisades come rumbling down. >> i am sorry, i am crying a litt

north reno was five. now there's seven. truckee in south lake tahoe are about two below. little hint of a breeze. not much, but enough that kind of keep things from being colder. fairfield concord, oakland. i know it's not much, but that that does it. so a lot of 30s, some 40s showing up here. livermore though, is down to 30. that is the coldest on this on this panel right here. most locations are hovering around 33 to 34, 35 degrees. a few clouds off the coast, some coming down from the north. so mostly sunny today. maybe some partly cloudy to the north. so system will come in on tuesday for some. light rain won't be much on tuesday. wednesday system looks to be of the same ilk as the one we had on saturday. so more snow for the mounds a little bit more rain for us. the key going forward is going to be late friday, more likely saturday if you can get the merging of a polar jet and a system from the west, it would be a cold front. it could produce some copious amounts of rain. the question is where does it set up? right now it looks to be about north of santa rosa, but ag

north today. this is video from lake tahoe.ather service says the tahoe area was expected to see anywhere between 5 to 20 inches of snow this weekend. you can see it there travel in the area and not recommended as this storm been moving in. winds gusting as high as 50 miles per hour and lower elevations and up to 80 to 100 miles per hour over the cr ridges. all right. let's get you a final check of your 4 zone forecast tonight as we take a look at coit tower here in san francisco, gayle ong. joining us now with a look at what to expect a >> yet here in the bay area, we're talking about the chilly temperatures. so these are the numbers. you'll be waking up to. you're at the freezing mark and santa rosa. 32 degrees livermore. you'll be waking up to 31 below freezing and even 36 degrees in san jose. so we're actually in a frost advisories stretching from the north bay down to the south bay for our interior valleys, our inland communities. so just keep in mind for those sensitive groups definitely dress in layers and look out for o

north. as you might imagine. i mean, there's plenty to go around. even sausalito is at 42 tiburon, 43 point race station at 33 zero. truckee, one below south lake tahoe. crescent city at a 41 in san diego and 40 in phenix. so there's some cold readings north to south, some light snow made it into scottsdale yesterday. north scottsdale higher clouds will continue to come down from the northwest, but mostly sunny or fair today. one of my least favorite words. my other one is showers, but occasionally they apply. and today is one of those days. some rain will make it on tuesday light, but then a stronger system comes in on wednesday and this will be another cold one. so good snow for the mountains. the key will be friday night into saturday. it looks like there will be a merging of a system from the west. from one to the north. look at crescent city. i mean it already starting to now. i've seen some projections that show more than that for us, but we'll just ease into it. take the middle of the road for now. mostly clear morning, cold for most. there is a little bit of a breeze. sun, then clouds cool to nice. so a lot of high clouds coming in 50 on the

lake tahoe, mammoth at 21. they were 17. now 21 cloud cover coming in and rain. i'll mention santa rosa north more likely it will be mendocino county, lake county as we go into the weekend. don't always paint warmer, but that's what we have coming in on the forecast. so rain north, cloud south mostly cloudy, mild to warm though today, especially tomorrow. and then on sundays we get a south wind in advance of this system, which will be just giving heavy rain to the pacific northwest. our setup does look like rain returns, but not until wednesday. okay but then you know, there's a lot of lot of hyperbole on twitter. and stuff. the pattern actually looks like it does this later in the week. that's colder. that's what we call it system driving in from the gulf of alaska and all the forecast models show that. so that in turn would lower snow levels and that would make these systems more cold fronts and progressive, which i buy into now. again, the first system wednesday could be a wet one, but it doesn't look like it sets up shop and hangs around long. it does look like it continues to move, but a

because the orange is where there is considerable risk and you'll see that all of lake tahoe is in that section which goes north of truckee and all the way south to bear valley. so that's where they have are saying there is a danger, considerable risk for an avalanche there. kyle is here to talk about the snow that get. so that is athletes dot org and they rank this from one to 5 one being very little risk. obviously 3 is considerable risk. then you get into high risk which is 4 and then you get into the highest which is 5. so. >> that is to say that it's me a check out that map and it means that we do have a considerable danger there. and certainly we've seen a fatality and some injuries there. it is something to keep an eye on. avalanche dot org is a good resource. if you're person that does spend a lot of time up in this year as we roll through our next storm here you can see we're expecting snow showers to kick off friday night. so later this evening into saturday, the heavier snow is going commute on saturday and then start to clear out as we get to sunday. so this is where they have this winter storm warn

a winter storm warning up around lake tahoe, the advisory, the flood advisory, the urban and small stream flood advisory for the north bay will be dropped at 11. you can kind of see why, but i wouldn't be surprised to see something load up down here in the santa cruz mountains, as that area sort of lingers and stalls out there again. the west slope of sierra nevada, those snow levels are going to be dropping pretty quickly, and we will see a lot of snow from this as it goes into the evening hours, as those snow levels go from where it was raining at lake level earlier today to now snowing and perhaps a foot to two feet overnight, maybe three. here's the forecast model at 1 a.m. tomorrow morning. so see santa cruz mountains. i'll just rock it back and forth. so they're sort of in a bit of a bull's eye. there for a few hours. so let's see what happens there. in terms of advisories. i'll be back here in a few minutes. we'll take a look at the forecast. we do have another one lined up for this week. and then a bit of a break. see you back here. >> sounds good. bill thank you. and as bill just showed us, tonight's rain re

north. that's why snow levels were so low. that's why the winter storm warning is still in effect around lake tahoe.y're getting a foot, maybe a foot and a half, maybe two feet of snow. we'll see how tomorrow morning pans out. the current temperatures are still mild because the winds are still kind of dying down, but when they get dead, which they will tonight, frost will form and temperatures will get down below freezing in many spots. so we're going to find temperatures in some of those inland spots, like santa rosa and napa. right at freezing. so the frost advisory, the forecast overnight lows. there they are. you can see that they're mostly in the 30s and low 30s and mid 30s. but check out santa rosa. 30 degrees is 40 in oakland and then san jose 37. so that's pretty cool. i mean urban center 37 degrees. so we're looking at the satellite image here. and you can see that we've got some cold air continuing to filter into the area. that cold air will modify a bit tomorrow. but daytime highs will be in the 50s again. so there's the scattered showers that are out there. here's the model. they get a k

north right now. little bit of snow around the sierra nevada around lake tahoe. it's not interfering with anything though. you're smooth sailing getting up there. high pressure. ridge is really blocking most of anything from getting our direction as we make our way through the day today. a lot more cloud cover than we saw yesterday. it is partly cloudy, but still very pleasant showers should remain firm of the most part up into lake and mendocino county tomorrow evening. you may see a few brief light showers moving through the core of the bay. most of us are going to see anything this weekend they'll we are looking at a very dry forecast tuesday night wednesday into thursday. just the opposite. a very wet forecast as rainfall anticipated to make its return. as i mentioned on tuesday night. so get ready for that. in the meantime, just really enjoy what we've got out there with these daytime highs in the sixties today. areas like san jose getting up to 66 degrees today. that's not to mention what we got later on this weekend. santa clara on sunday for the niners ga

lake. we're in the upper 30s, a lot more 40s to the north, that is for sure. 43 rohnert park, sebastopol, 42 degrees, 44 sonoma, 49 vallejo and american canyon, 30 and truckee's 26 south lake tahoeucaipa, 50 from monterey, santa barbara, los angeles and san diego system tomorrow is on its way. there's a lot ripping across the pacific, but it's going to start lifting northward. we'll lean on some rain tomorrow, maybe a quarter of an inch to. i think a half should probably cover it for most and less farther north, and i think there'll be a little bit more there. there will be some rain friday and saturday northward. i mean, as in santa rosa, northward. mendocino county, no doubt. probably lake up to look at crescent city. i mean, that is some serious rainfall. and that's what's going up there. there are some hints that maybe the jet stream will dip back down towards us middle of next week. low clouds, fog, drizzle, but mostly cloudy. more but then more sunshine here as we head towards the late morning and early afternoon as that fog burns off 60s on the temps. we'll get some rain here tomorrow. a break on thursday day. a lot of cloud cover, some rain north friday saturday. but rig

north bay. low to mid 30s tomorrow morning to start your sunday. notice as the rain moves out heavy snow still ongoing in the sierra. look at the temperatures up at lake tahoe. 24 degrees. the wind is 30 to 40 miles an hour. this expires at 4:00 tomorrow morning. high temperatures tomorrow stay in the 20s. coming up we have cold weather on the way. temperatures are quite cold. locally frost advisories for the next couple of mornings and more of these cold storms on the way in the seven-day forecast. >>> after what rob just said this will not surprise you. the roads to and from tahoe are looking like this. this is video from interstate 80. multiple spin outs on donner summit. traffic in both directions was being turned down. chain controls are in effect for 50 and 80. once you get there it might take a while to get there. but you will find this once you get there. not any people are on the slopes. the storm forced the resort to shut down most lifts. only four were open we checked around 3:00 this afternoon. as the storm moves through you can see it is still a little bit wet on the roads in san jose right now. you can track the brain and cold temperatures in

north. it's going to take a while. this is a slow moving system, 30s and 40s on the temps here in the mountains. nine truckee 30 south lake tahoest be a breeze or something. 28 at reno, susanville 32. now this will be a different setup for the mountains. it will be warmer so the snow level will go up. will be more like sierra cement versus the powder that they had from the last two systems. so a lot of show not much go today although drizzle light rain certainly possible late tonight. tomorrow morning. therein lies kind of the rub on the forecast. i mean you can be san francisco, oakland south and get that light drizzle, whereas the real rain is up on the north coast taking its sweet time getting here. and that's kind of the way it looks here for as we go into saturday. and you can see by 3:00 there's not much south, nothing being forecast. santa cruz mountains yet. santa rosa is in the soup, as we say. and then by saturday night, overnight into early sunday, finally the front moves south and weakens heaviest amounts again, i'm sticking with marin county. north looks to be the line far less to the south as that begins to weaken

north of us. look at the sleet, then the snow. it will fall in the greater lake tahoeimarily for your wednesday. it all clears out by wednesday night. here is the sierra snow fall. while we do have the winter weather advisory in place tonight at 10:00 all the way through 4 a.m. on thursday, we're talking about a foot of snow possible easily at 6000ft and also falling all the way down to 5000ft. i wanted to share this with you. 40 degrees currently in the greater lake tahoe area, but tomorrow's daytime high only in the low 30s. that's when we transition from rain to the snowfall. all right, so when is the snow out of here? well, it will disperse easily by wednesday, late night or thursday. so here's what you can expect again. up to 2.5in of rain. and the what is okay and a breezy night with temperatures tumbling into the 40s. few low 50s tomorrow. who cares about the highs will barely reach 60 degrees. it's the rain. and please be careful driving. we have sunshine on thursday and another wet day on saturday. okay roberta. >> thank you. some unusual twins born over the n

north. right. and that's just light stuff. there might even be a few snow flurries up around lake tahoe.ries up around mount lassen, mount shasta. but tomorrow is going to be a really nice day. and we're going to find temperatures in the morning pretty mild. it's valley fog again. we had it this morning. we had dense fog advisory issues in the north bay. the forecast model tomorrow and then saturday morning, saturday afternoon and then sunday. and so that just more clouds are going to be around. that's what that's meant to show. and then everything changes next week. and again, tons of noise on that. but just give it time. it's winter. it's california. everybody's all fired up because a lot of folks haven't lived here very long, and so they haven't seen an el nino year like this. so there's a lot of people getting fired up and grabbing on to models, as they probably shouldn't be. so anyway, let's just hold off, see what happens as we go through this weekend. it's going to be warm. i can tell you that it's going to be pretty wet starting wednesday next week. >> all right, bill, thank you.

for many that has stirred up some of this, especially areas to the north, doesn't mean you can't get the fog, but 2729 south lake tahoeu're seeing the breezes as i put in 700 millibars. the wind that's that's coming out of the south. eventually that's going to take those temperatures up. that's just too warm. i mean, it's going to get it up probably, you know, 40s or something before the front arrives, which will send the snow level way up. but 10:00 tonight, winter weather advisory starts, goes through 4 p.m. saturday. the snow level will start to come down tomorrow. our system is inching closer. i need to get that run in or go get nine holes of golf, and we'll go now because you maybe get an hour or two. then i think some lightrillionain begins. but the front is still well offshore. it's actually slowing down a little bit. it's developing. so it's going to enhance some rainfall. but this will be later. so we'll get rain tonight i think we'll get some pretty good rainfall. santa cruz mountains, mount tamalpais i think these numbers are going to go up. they were higher yesterday. they've come down. i think they're goi

lake tahoe area starting today, and it's been a slow start to the winter season. the first sierra snowpack survey , in fact, showed only a few inches in this area. north star and heavenly have 65 and 70% of their terrain closed because of it. now kirkwood is at around 50, and we also know 55 ski lifts across the tahoe basin are still closed. >> it's a thin base, but this mountain ski is so fun and this snow level, lots of terrain to play with. and, uh, yeah, i think, you know, getting, getting the backside and chair for going, uh, this weekend, this sunday, ideally, um, we'll be set up for the rest of the season ahead. >> and the storm is expected to bring snow that will not only be good for skiing and snowboarding, but also cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile tours. i remember being up there last year where the snow was towering above our camera, and now, as you can see, the area actually really needs it for us here in the bay area though, that rain that's coming with this system, how are our rain totals catching up? >> you know, oakland is about 47% of average and 97% of average in santa rosa. so there is a ways to go for the east bay,

lake tahoe for the bay area. we've seen a couple of sprinkles right around santa rosa, the most of our rainfall is set to arrive into the afternoon, though, for the north bay. it's going to be late morning into early afternoon for the rest of us. it's smack dab in the middle of your evening commute. making its way through fully anticipate taking it slow on the drive home from work in that extra few minutes to get home is going to something you kind of have to expect. pockets of rainfall continue on through the evening and on into tomorrow as well. especially early on in the day tomorrow will gradually dry out. see some skies clearing up into tomorrow afternoon. and that sets us up for a breather from the rain on thursday for another system moves in friday into saturday. rainfall totals today will be around a half an inch to even more than that for a few spots. will be nice. nothing too terribly, much so any effects of flooding and stuff like that? pretty nonexistent. just wet slick roadways. 2034 miles per hour. wind gusts today. it is going to be a breezy afternoon along with that rain in for the sierra nevada, of couple feet of snowfall at the very c
