stephanie gosk as we said is live at the clark county election building in north las vegas. stephanie, what are you hearing? >> reporter: you know, willie, the top election official spoke to us yesterday and he says they are working as fast as they can to get through those ballots where they've got their maximum staff and machines and space. and, you know, i asked him, i said, listen, if you had more space and you had more people and you had more machines, would it go a little faster, and he said maybe, but i don't. and he tells us they're going as fast as they can. last night you had a vote drop, about 31,000 statewide. once again, those votes broke heavily, almost two-thirds of the vote, for cortez masto. and the lead that laxalt had going into the evening, agent 15,000 votes, that shrunk down to 9,000. if you take what's remaining, and we think there are more than 50,000 here in clark county, statewide that could be less than 100,000, they continue to break that way for cortez masto, she could take the lead. the question is by how much? and you could have a lead here shri

our team coverage live from north las vegas and ashley, you've been covering the senate race there for months. what are you hearing from elections officials? good evening, julie. these officials will be counting counting, counting a lengthy process as we know that could take days or even over a week to finally know the results, but it really comes down to clark county, which includes las vegas. that's where a majority of the states votes comes from. now the elections department says they've fully counted all in person votes on election day. they are currently working on counting those mail in ballots. they account for most of the votes cast in clark county. this area usually votes democratic, which is key for incumbent senator catherine cortez masto. she's relying on those uncounted votes here to boost her vote count and her opponent, republican adam laxalt , he has the edge right now, with about 22,600 more votes for the entire state. the registrar of voters told the media this morning that they have about 14,700 mail in ballots from monday to process and count. we should know those r

and with me now is nbc news correspondent vaughn hillyard in phoenix, stephanie gosk is in north las vegas for us, and i will start with you, steph, it feels like today, the intrigue is all about nevada. election officials are saying the votes, based on where they're coming from, and the big picture question is, would it be enough for the incumbent democratic senator catherine cortez masto to catch up with adax laxalt. what is the thinking? what is the sense of what we know? >> if you look at the last two days, what we've seen is the vote, two-thirds for cortez masto, if that trend continues, then she has the ability to erase that lead, and maybe even go further than that, but that's what the numbers show, we just heard from joe gloria, here, the top elections official, in clark county, and he was giving us an idea of how long it would take to get through the mail-in ballots, yesterday he said about 50,000 and today, he said there will be another chunk that will be recorded tonight, 15,900, and then you have the remaining, a little over 30,000. so he said they could be wrapped up, with the

gary tuchman is live in north las vegas where we're focusing on nevada. just got out of a clark county press briefing. the bulk of uncounted votes in nevada are from clark county, as we understand it. las vegas, so what did they tell you about where they are on the timing here? >> reporter: you're right. the biggest chunk of votes are in this building. the election department in clark county, nevada. we just went inside the building, we saw the tabulating going on. here are the numbers that we can tell you and more about the timing. there are 50,000 ballots ready to be counted. 16,000 of those ballots will be tabulated today. we will see those numbers tonight. 34,000 of those ballots may be tabulated today and counted tonight, but if they're not finished, by tomorrow, they expect all 50,000 of those ballots to be counted and we will see those numbers. but, and this is a big but the, in addition, there's another 15,000 votes that are provisional ballots or have to be cured. the deadline is next week for that. so this is a potential of up to 62,000 more vot

. >> let's go to gary grumbach from north las vegas. we have the nevada senate race. that's the nail-biter, a bitter one today. what are the expectations there? when will we know the outcome? >> i want to talk you through what is yet to be counted. that will give us an idea of when the nbc news decision desk may be able to make a call here. we're still waiting on 20,000 ballots from clark county will to be counted, and 9000 ballots in washer county. those will pretty much decide the race here in nevada. these are mail-in ballots. they are also ballots that were dropped and drop boxes on election day at polling sites. we want to talk through the big batch of votes. in clark county, we have 27,000 votes, cortez masto picked up with -- laxalt picking up 9000. in what show county, these ballots drops have been skewing towards katherine cortez masto, about 60%, that is been a trend throughout the entire week. and the decision just likes to see trans before they make decisions. -- why we are on election day five here. here's what the county clerk include county had to say.

let's get to cnn's rosa flores outside the clark county election center in north las vegas.over there, rosa? >> reporter: well, wolf, we are anxiously waiting for the results from clark county to be posted. we are refreshing our computers, and we will bring you those results as soon as we have them. as the eyes of america zoom in to nevada and clark county here where i am, right now it is just past 5:00 p.m. pacific time. now, that's the statutory deadline for mail-in battle. that's important because by law all mail-in battle that are received in registrars like the one you see behind me across this state have to be counted by law. earlier clark county officials telling cnn they had received 268 mail-in battle just today, but the registrar said he was going to make another trip to the usps at 5:00 p.m. to make sure that all of those battle are counted. we are asking to see if indeed more battle railroad receive. we are waiting to hear back on that. let me give you a quick state of play of the more than 50,000 battle that still remain to be counted here in the state of nevada

las vegas. >> i was checking the sports books last night thinking that i would run into mike somewhere here, but, you know, barack obama here, he did a big event, north las vegas last night. huge turnout, lots of thousands of nevadans came out last night for the whole of the democratic ticket. there's, you know, the debate over what's going on in the state in both the senate race and the governor's race is intense. and there was a poll last night from emerson that has adam laxalt up 5 at 50 with senator cortez masto at 5 back. there's also been polls that show them neck and neck. that, again, is another margin of error poll. so, what it's -- and there's an incredible amount of debate taking place. some of it pretty well informed, some of it utterly ill informed on social media and other places about polling methodology, about republican polls and democratic polls and people trying to rig the polling averages and all kinds of stuff. we're now not just talking about people rigging and skewing polls, but trying to rig and skew polling averages. i'll tell you here on the ground in nevada, in every one of these states i've been in over the course of the l

las vegas, corrupt. the county's registrar says he is misinformed. our gary tuchman joins me now from north las vegas.tch at some point this evening. do you know -- any sense of what that might be? i understand the total outstanding is what, about 125,000? >> reporter: it's unclear, erin, how high that number will get. it's about 120,000. that's the estimate. but what's unique about nevada is you can send in your mail ballots as long as it's sent by election day, it can arrive by saturday. s about an unknown number of ballots in the postal system right now but we're expecting an election result update later this evening. there are literally tens of thousands of ballots being counted right now in all 17 counties in the state including inside this building at the clark county election headquarters. this is by far the most populous county in the state of nevada. 75% of the population lives here. here's what we know right now. there are still 50,000 ballots to be counted. those ballots either have been mailed in or were put in drop boxes on election day. and then there's an additional 13,000 ballots that

on the ground in all the key battleground states -- gary tuchman is in north las vegas, nevada for usson, hello to you here in nevada's most populous county of clark county, almost three quarters of nevadans live. there's still a lot of tabulating going on at the clock county elections department. between today and tomorrow it's expected that the people who work here will be counting an additional 83,000 ballots. today they counted 13,000 more ballots. these are not ballots of people who voted -- in person. those ballots are all counted. what these are mail-in ballots. you may say to yourself, where they counting tens of thousands of ballots like this? it sounds weird, it sounds suspicious. it is not at all suspicious. it is not at all weird. they seem to have been doing a great job. and this was to be expected because this state prioritizes mail-in ballots. every single person who register to vote here in the state of nevada received a mail-in ballot. so, they have received lots of them over the last two weeks. in addition to that, as long as it was postmarked by yesterday, the mail-

get's begin with gary tuckman in north las vegas.that's right, jake. here in clark county, which has more than 70% of nevada's total population, tens of thousands of votes still haven't been counted. now, all the in-person votes for yesterday and election day excement for a few provisional ballots have been counted. the ones that haven't counted are mail-in on dropped in drop boxes. here, that's the most popular way to vote during this election. mail-in balloting and it's heavily favored tdemocrats in te first two weeks of mail-in balloting. it's a bit confusing but my job is to make it clear. today, this county announced it will count 14,718 votes that were received in the mail yesterday and put in drop boxes on monday then no later than tomorrow, they'll start counting more than 12,700 more that were picked up at the postal service today and dropped in drop boxes yesterday. more than 300 drop boxes at the election stations all over this county. it's significant because many groups and labor unions and other political organizations

in las vegas, there's guad, new hampshire, kristen dahlgren and apex, north carolina, antonia hilton. so i want to begin with you. what are you seeing down on the ground in nevada? >> when you look at those lines, nevada's unique in the sense that a lot of voters here can vote early so one-third of voters have already cast their ballots so we have an idea for what the turnout has been and it's tight. a very narrow lead from the democrats but then about one-fifth of the voters that cast the ballots through mail-in or coming in to vote early before election day, but one-fifth of those are nonpartisans so it's very difficult to know which candidates they'll end up supporting. for months, we've been talking to the non-partisan voters in nevada that we knew could decide the election. they wanted someone who could work across the aisle. they were going to choose a candidate who they thought would support the issues that matter to nevada, but it's difficult for republicans or democrats to know who the nonpartisans are going to be choosing. we know that a lot of republicans come in to in the-
