so we went outside the white house gates, fence to the north lawn here, and just to show you this video, it is pretty dramatic. many protesters, a billing veteran's march in washington, as you know today, don, they are there protesting the fact that that memorial is shut down while the government has been closed. they were over there at the memorial with ted cruz, sarah palin, mike lee. they are not satisfied to have the protest there. they picked up barricades and carried them to the white house and dumped them in a pile in front of the fence to the north lawn of the white house. almost to the point where conceivably someone could have climbed up the pile of barricades and entered the white house grounds. obviously all of that caught the attention of u.s. park police. they came out on horse back. some in riot gear. there is even an armored vehicle that arrived at one point, don. there were protesters who were obviously supporters of the veteran's cause of seeing memorials and fringe groups gloming on to this protest. one man waving a confederate flag. other folks holding up "impeach ob

house correspondent and i was covering the war in afghanistan, but doing so from the comfort of the north lawn think my coverage was focused like a lot of coverage on troop levels that were glibly vandyed about, 20,000, 40,000, about the political rivalries between the pentagon and the white house and general mccyrystal versus president obama. and i didn't really get to the individual battles, the individual people. and so, obviously, writing this book made me appreciate the war in a much more substantive manner than i think some of the typical washington, d.c., coverage of war gives it. and i'm focusing on my own coverage at the time. not so much everybody else's. but, also, i think people in washington very glibly talk about sending force in here and sending force in there, and i think it gave me a greater appreciation of the complexities of sending in force, and how it's not necessarily the right answer all the time, and that if you do do it, if a general and president sends troops in, they need to have everything they need and deserve to do the job effectively. >> and i'll say it, it certa
