texas. we still have the storms ongoing. over the evening hours and through out the overnight hours we saw the strong storms produce three recorded tornadoes across north central texas one east of wichita falls and one granbury, texas which is reported to be a mile wide. there are reports homes are leveled and that would mean that would a stronger tornado classified as an es 3, ef 4 possibly an ef-5 tornado. we will survey the damage and determine how strong that tornado possibly was. if it were an ef 5 that would mean possibly winds over 200 miles an hour. it is all preliminary. crews need to take a look at the damage. we have reports of very large sized hail. there are reports for multiple counties that some of these hail were baseball sized, grapefruit size that would cause significant damage to these areas. we have 14 reports of damaging winds gusts one of them being at 80 miles an hour. that of course causes damage bringing down tree branchs and also power lines. that is something we will continue to also monitor. we could potentially see the number of tornadoes rise once survey crews continue to rise. wind damage h. the tornado was said to have b

i want to show again what it was like on the ground last night in north texas. the video shot in granbury. listen. the power of a twister, ef-4 tornado touching down. the second most severe on the rating scale. joining me is the head of the trauma center at lake granbury medical center. doctor, appreciate you joining us. i mean, what did you see last night? were you prepared for the trauma? >> well, you know, we have disaster plans in place for these kind of things. you know, we always prepare for this but never really expect it. so about 8:15 last night, we set out our code orange, which is our disaster plan. basically any personnel, cafeteria workers, ancillary staff, medical providers, doctors, nurses, all came back in to the emergency department to help out. we were prepared for our first patient that came in about 9:00 last night. >> wow. what kind of injuries were you seeing? >> generally head injuries, a lot of orthopedic injuries, amputations, open fractures. a lot of just abrasions and contusions. a lot of really shaken up people, for sure. >> were you

these storms will eventually drift into north texas producing severe weather here in north texas as we go into late morning and early afternoon hours. now, the setup has been just right for severe weather. big upper level low spinning in the northern plains and the spokes of energy are rotating around that upper level low. we had a cold front and a dry line draped across oklahoma yesterday. south winds blowing in. strong westerly winds aloft. that got the storms rotating and produced that tornado in moore, oklahoma. it was an ef-4 tornado which is a rarity. we only see about 2% of all tornadoes in that ef-4 to ef-5 category and winds from 166 to 200. severe threat today from michigan all of the way down into texas. if you live in this orange area there's a threat again of some tornadoes during the day today. charlie? >> larry mowry, thanks. >> there are so many different areas of the city that have been destroyed. the tornado itself was very very wide. it just wiped out miles of areas and homes and businesses. it's probably the worst i've ever seen. >> worst than may 3rd, '99? >> worst

. >>> at least six people are dead after spring tornado outbreak in north texas. this video was shot in the town of millsap, but granbury, texas, about 40 miles southwest of fort worth, is the scene of the most destruction. and right now, a live news conference is happening in granbury. we are going to listen in for just a minute. >> got there as quick as we could, got the sirens set off. i think there's some video that was put out through some of your organizations that you can see the tornado in the background and hear the sirens going off. so we got information out there as fast as we could as soon as we realized it was getting bad. so we did it as fast as we could as fast as the information was coming out as fast as we knew things weren't looking very good we got the information out for people to take cover. >> you're hearing from the sheriff of hood county, texas, talking obviously about getting that information out to the residents in that town. he was talking a little bit about the sirens going off and the warnings given to those residents when the tornado w

we had this strong system move eastward and produce thunderstorms across north central texas startingp.m. in north central texas and continued into the overnight hours producing that damage that you see on your screen out here. so just very devastating. and the storms are estimated to have been moving through parts of granberry and parts of sunset in texas at about 7:15 p.m. local time so during the evening hours. the sun was setting, many people could not see these tornadoes if they were on the ground which is why it's so important to heed these warnings when they are issued. differing numbers as far as how many tornadoes touched down. the storm prediction center has on their web site a preliminary report of about three tornadoes, but some offices are stating that up to ten tornadoes could have touched down and, bill, part of the reason why we could see those differing numbers is one tornado could have touched down, lifted up very briefly and then touched down again, and that would actually be two separate tornadoes. so that is something to keep in mind. damaging winds reported of up

thft some of the debris that you see scattered across north texas.milies are having to deal with. it is their lives, not just debris. there were people missing immediately after the storm of as many as 14. that was cut down to seven. today officials are telling us everyone has been accounted for. that's the good news but those who are survivors riding through a storm like this. i can't imagine what it was like to see all this flying around. we talked with one of those who rode out the storm. >> it started rocking. i'm on my hands and knees. in the bathtub. and on the fourth rock, it just up ended and toppled and blew me into the next door neighbor's yard. >> reporter: just a wild ride for so many here. now the recovery really begins in earnest. so they're piling up all the sheet metal. everything they can. they'll begin to haul it away but i think a lot of people are working through their shock and beginning to understand that that is something that won't happen in days or weeks or months in some cases. it will take years. you talked about those habi

we begin with breaking news in north texas, where at least six people have died when a tornado touchedefighters using flashlights are going house to house looking for anybody still trapped. abc's jim ryan reports from the hard hit town of granbury. >> reporter: this storm rolled in from the southwest and tornado sirens started blaring just before sunset. witnesses say pea-sized hail turned to baseball sized and then hailstones the size of grapefruit were pounding a subdivision near the town of granbury, not far from ft. worth. >> it's a subdivision of hood county, south of granbury, about three miles the way the crow flies out there, i guess, and there's about 110 homes in that residential area. been told that most all of that is in heavy damage, totally destroyed conditions out there. >> reporter: as paramedics were rushing into the area to treats dozens of injuries, school buses were pulling away taking evacuees to churches turned into shelters. those people are telling stories of an extremely intense rain wrapped tornado that's done extensive damage to neighborhoods. >> it's been a
