think morning commute northbay, evening commute for everybody from the golden gate south.ll look at this another way, because one of the best ways to look at this system is to gauge the rainfall by using what we would call the ensemble forecast model, which is probably the most responsible way to start gauging rainfall amounts, and, to a degree, also timing. watch what happens when we color in the map on this. by the time we got into the line:00 hour on wednesday, we've already gotten some rain in northbay. it hasn't been a deluge, but we've gotten .2 of rain. watch the numbers start ticking upwards, now we're later in the morning, 10:00 in the morning. let's advance a little more, now we're looking at the early afternoon. by this point, the northbay has already accumulated well over an engine we're starting to see the rain move into the rest of the bay. as we go through the late afternoon, the numbers start ticking up for everybody else, this gets toward evening. the total is over two inches in the northbay and by thursday morning, you're looking at total accumulation of

we could see close to 4 inches of rainfall in the northbay, close to an inch and a half to san jose.'s dive into our forecast. for the most part, we are talking about upper 50s and lower 60s. santa rosa hitting 61 later today. we stretch down into the santa clara valley with highs in the mid 60s through san jose. off to a mild start but we have a big change in the forecast as early as tomorrow afternoon. as we head into this weekend, keep the umbrellas handy. our inland forecast is looking really wet and we will see a very similar trend for our friends along the bay too. if you live in san francisco or anywhere throughout the bay, showers rollback and throughout mid next week. we will keep you updated on those totals. >>> we are counting down this saturday. the niners are itching to play a meaningful game as they get ready to kick off the playoff run. matt lively has more in the red and gold report. >> the 49ers are well rested during the wildcard weekend. 24 other nfl teams are hanging out at home or hitting the golf course. the niners are hoping that they don't get another week off

it is cloudy and cool throughout the bay area but we are starting to see rainfall up in the northbay. areas like ukiah, bodega bay and everywhere in between, we saw our first splash of showers and we will see round two right around the corner. this system starts to track inland close to sonoma and napa. heading into the afternoon hours , it will be a lot heavier for everyone throughout the bay area. for now, dry in san francisco. like a completely different picture within the next hour. this is 1:00. the peninsula gets hit, continuing to see on shore hours move in into the evening hours. many of us are heading home from work at 4:00 after a long weekend and we will see close to a quarter inch of rain in the northbay. down into the south bay, close to san jose into the 8:00 hour, notice the band starting to clear up into the northbay, leaving up with -- us with over a half inch of rain that fell. i will let you know when we will see more rain coming up in just a bit. >>> a tragic update this afternoon on that plane crash in san mateo county. we are now learning a second person has died

this is 8:00, by the time we get to 9:00, we are seeing showers in the northbay. this is phase one.s it looked, there's going to be a break in the action and it is going to come by the time we get to the early afternoon. this is the point in the morning we are all getting light rain. and look how it clears out. we will go into the middle of the day and there probably won't be a lot, maybe some scattered showers for the northbay. there's always a chance at any point of the day you will have some light rain coming through. then, as we get towards sunset, 5:00, 6:00, the more noticeable rain comes back for the northbay at that point. and that will work south from there, we will be seeing widespread rain getting down to the golden gate by 7:00 tonight, and from there to work its way down to the south bay. and after 10:00 tonight, it will clear out and we will be done. but it's really not until about 3:00, 4:00 in the morning before the stragglers are out of here. if we look at the totals, maybe 7/10 of an inch of rain. it is not overwhelming, we don't anticipate widespread flooding but

it will keep reining in the northbay and it will also be a wednesday evening commute issue up there. for the majority of us it is late morning through the evening rainfall event that really adds up from wednesday into thursday morning. looking at rainfall totals big enough on here that timeframe, all day wednesday into thursday that the national weather service has issued a flood watch. this is very similar to what we had last week. the way it played out was you had some ponding of water on roadways and low-lying intersections that were problematic and some streams and creeks were able to approach their banks. that is the same description for how it will likely go wednesday to thursday. that covers the rain standpoint of this and the potential for flooding concerns. there is also a wind issue for this. there is a really organized conference we've been through, coming through wednesday night, primarily, the second half of the day into thursday morning, watch the bright colors up there and the timing up there for the wind advisory fits. that comes through the second half of the day wed

about a quarter inch of rain in the northbay.e a look at the south bay, the numbers should be pretty similar to that. bottom line, it is enough to get the streets slick tonight. we are not worried about flooding. there is not even a significant wind component although it will get a few -- a bit breezy. it will snow in the sierra but not super impressive. we will get a couple inches on donner pass but that will impact anyone who needs to drive over the mountains tomorrow night. that covers what is going on with this system. let's take one other look at the forecast for tomorrow. we are done with the rain tomorrow. it has a chance to clear out. you will be looking at daytime highs in the low 60s. these numbers apply to wednesday, wednesday afternoon typically right around 3:00, 4:00 . let's look ahead. wednesday and thursday are both pretty easy. there is not a whole lot going on. by friday, the next system gets here. let's pull backup the forecast imagery to find the next storm. when we do that, we can see there is a series of the

this is still the rain to fall in the northbay. most of the rain still has not fallen yet from the city, south. those totals get you down into the santa clara valley. this is an atmospheric river. it is a pineapple express. you can see how why you. we are pulling and a warm tap of subtropical moisture. this is the official forecast on the intensity of this. let's just pull out the details and you can see it falling in the shades of green. this is a category 2 on a scale of one to five. this is a moderate atmospheric river from a rainfall standpoint. the wind is something different and there is a high wind warning that stays in effect from now through tomorrow morning at 4:00 in the primary areas of concern, santa cruz mountains, the peninsula and now the east bay hills because the wind will be strong enough over those ridge tops that any vulnerability to weaken trees that could go down, that would be the biggest concern for now through 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. keep that in mind. it is really the communities right along skyline and those

northbay valleys and perhaps even around napa, be on guard for that possibility.an see the likely places, on this virtual map. the sheltered valleys appear up to sonoma. now that we have covered that, let's get back to the issue at hand. a decent amount of rain and we go back to the other big view. i walk over to our other forecast image just to spotlight how the rain that is coming across now is coming over in waves. we have seen a couple of ways already come across for the commute so far. another is about to come on shore. when we look at this on the big, see how there is one right there? when we pause it here we can see the one about to come on shore, moving over the bay bridge an hour ago, and the one still coming right across the heart of the bay. that is probably the best perspective to see this. literally , like waves. on-again off-again. we are watching the east bay, now, you can see just like where we were an hour ago with the previous ways going through places like san leandro and then skipping over to 680. you can see deadline coming in for 680 right no

of the bay area, 1 to 3 inches, some of these great pockets here over the santa cruz mountains, northbaymountains, that is where you could get up to 4 inches the creeks, streams and rivers once again rising fast. we make it into some street flooding. that is why the concern is pretty real for us right now. otherwise, starting after tomorrow we begin with temperatures in the 50s, primarily a dry commute. showers over san francisco on the northbay before we get hit hard with the storm system through the afternoon and evening and after some 70s this week, we are going back down into some 50s across the bay area. much colder, just like winter out here, 56 in santa rosa, 51 in san jose. if you're going to the sierra, a foot of snow with this storm system and sunday, monday we could see totals of 4 feet at the higher elevations with blizzard conditions possible. again, tomorrow spotty thunderstorms thursday. a few spidey showers friday and saturday. the next storm system sunday and monday. wind gust may top up to 60 miles per hour sunday and another 1 to 2 inches of rain so really glad we stil
