philadelphia northeast airport has a control tower. it's actually why i've flown there so many times because as i was doing my pilot training, i needed to be at an airport that had a control tower that wasn't as busy as philadelphia, but it's in the philadelphia airspace, which means flights that are going any distance in and out still fall under philadelphia's air traffic control, even though there's a control tower there. so hopefully this plane doesn't have a black box on it. but they're hopefully, by the way, when your plane is out of control, you communicate. first you tell them, you tell the tower what the problem is. there are various codes you can use. you can say, mayday. they will ask you what the problem is and you always get priority. as a plane that has an emergency, you get priority over everybody and everything. you don't have to follow air traffic control rules. you don't have to follow anything you've learned. you don't have to listen to anybody else. your your goal at that point is to try and land your plane safely. t

it all happened in this neighborhood in northeast philadelphia.ey is a pilot and aviation expert and joins us now to react. kyle, thanks for joining us this morning. i know it's kind of impossible to say with any certainty what happened from where we're seated now, but you've seen the footage. what do you notice as a pilot that sticks out to you in terms of what went wrong here? >> this thing is coming down like a rocket and out of control. i would suspect there was a catastrophic failure on that plane of one of the components or even the fuse lodge breaking up part of which pretty much caused the airplane to be totally out of control. the other possibility is there very simply could have been a complete power failure on that airplane when it entered the clouds or before and the pilot just completely lost control at full power. that was coming down, it looked just like a missile. i have never seen a private jet, not even plummet to the ground. just basically came down at an angle with such incredible speed just like a missile. charlie: saying some

the focus is going to be over the midwest and sliding into the northeast.and you've already got some of that on the ground as we speak. you've got more snow headed into the midwest, moving over portions of wisconsin and michigan a little bit farther down to the south. you've got this part of the system now. it's got some rain, especially across portions of west virginia. but the big concern here is also going to be ice. so you've got a little bit of everything mixed in. so you've got all of these winter weather alerts. and it stretches pretty far from the midwest, great lakes region all the way over into the northeast. but here's the thing. as we go through the rest of the day, that system really starts to fill back in. you not only start to see more of that snow develop, but also the ice. and that's really going to be the key component, because no matter how safe you are, it is incredibly difficult to drive on ice. also, the one thing to note, it's still here for some areas in the northeast. even by tomorrow morning. so boston for example, you're going to

investigators say the learjet 55 only reached an altitude of 1500ft after it took off from northeast philadelphia airport. it crashed less than a minute after takeoff. the debris field is scattered over several blocks and engines have been recovered, but the ntsb is still looking for the jet's cockpit voice recorder. here's abc news reporter christiane cordero with the details. >> a massive inferno in the streets of northeast philadelphia. buildings and vehicles engulfed in flames. debris scattered in the streets. after a medical transport jet crashed into the residential area. >> and just crashed into the plaza. >> the jet taking off from northeast philadelphia airport shortly after 6 p.m. friday, crashing just moments later. surveillance video captured the moment it happened. you can see an explosive fireball in the night sky before the jet plummeted to the ground. the learjet 55 was operating as a medical ambulance carrying six people a pediatric patient, her mother and four crew members, according to the company that owns the jet. they were returning home to mexico with a stop in
