[laughter] and about a year later i was giving a talk on northeast asia and the head of the foreign affairst up -- a wonderful japanese man -- after my speech he got up and he said, ambassador edelman, for your service to this free world and for your remarks today, you deserve much clap. [laughter] i told him, it was all right. of all the things the world, much -- of all the things in the world i wanted, much clout is not one of them. [laughter] i always think of the first commencement address that ronald reagan gave as president of the united states and it was at the eureka college. he was there a few months after he was shot and reagan came out and he thanked the president and the faculty for giving him an honorary degree, and then he said, it is wonderful to get an honorary degree from eureka college. to tell you the truth, i always thought the first grade i got was honorary as well. [laughter] and then he said, just, -- you know, i did not get great great year, but just the other night i was sitting on the truman balcony and it was a starlit night and nancy and i were sitting some wine.

northeast japan >>> it was a beautiful week. let's go to saki ochi. >> welcome to your weather update. let's get a look at conditions across asia in the southeast, we're looking at these bright, white clouds here popping up, there say little bit more activity going on. we actually have a tropical depression in the south china sea. it does remain well off and wanders and for the moment it looks like at least indo china peninsula staying largely dry. central vietnam may pick up a few light showers but nothing too major expected for the next 24 hours. the northern end of the philippines may see chances of heavier downpours throughout the day and we look at some showers also moving across taiwan as well as the southern islands of japan, but otherwise across much of china, the korean peninsula, and even the indochina peninsula stay dry as does japan, for the most part it is going to be looking at the quite a bit of sunshine over the course of today. it's just this northwestern flank here that will see moisture coming in off the sea of japan and that will be cold rainfall as well as snow, although it does look like it's going to tape
