are here to urge something that will benefit millions of riders on the northeast corridor which runs from boston to washington, d.c. and i want to say, mr. president, we are mindful of the fact that we depend on national support for amtrak, even though the northeast corridor is far and away the most used and the most profitable of the amtrak lines. we are one amtrak. and we understand how important amtrak is observe eve, even if t serve many passengers in sparsely populated states and, of course, in more populated states in the midwest, the mideast and the south. now, what i'd like to point out, however, is that i believe -- and so, having said that, mr. president, i want to point out that i strongly believe in the long-distance service provided by amtrak. it connects rural communities and other economic hubs by rail. people want it and like this service. in upstate new york, in the buffalo-albany corridor, it's clearly not as used as the northeast corridor, but we know how much we depend on amtrak there and in the other 49 states people depend on it as well. since 1971, amtrak, in the northeast and throughout the
