in northeast washington community mourned as the investigation continues into the deadly crossfire. george lettis joins us now from bayview medical center. >> good morning. investigators still searching for the cause of the fire that killed five, including four young children. in the meantime, 55-year-old wilson worrell is in critical condition here at bayview medical center. four children and a grandmother were killed. heavy smoke and flames shooting from the home when firefighters arrived around 2:00 a.m. thursday. nine. members were trapped inside your some jumped out of the house to escape. wilson worrell jump from the second floor, but his wife nancy and her grandchildren -- 1-year- old james holden, 2-year-old kaniyah scott, 4-year-old darryl stewart and 7-year-old tykia marky all died in the fire. and there are the least three other survivors including two 19-year-old, one is believed to be the mother of the deceased children, and a two month old baby thrown from the house to save the. team of firefighters were injured in this fire. they are expected to be okay. we are live i

the entire northeast including major cities from washington to boston bracing for sandy. it is a monster storm. it is projected to bring life threatening storm surges with hurricane force winds and even heavy snow to some parts of west virginia. in the meantime sandy has shut down some airlines mountain transit into the new york area. the new york stock exchange stools a schools and banks as w. >> we have live team coverage for you. peter doocy sis live in delawar. mriz bette pran in the outer banks of north carolina. first we start with maria molina for the latest on sandy's path. where is sandy now? >> it is more than 300 miles away from the new york city areas to the south and southeast. we have an update from the national hurricane center. hurricane center moves through the storm and found out sandy has further intensified. the pressure dropped more and incredibly low out across the latitudes. maximum sustained winds stronger as well at 85 miles per hour. sandy is forecast to continue to strengthen and becoming post tropical system or extra tropical system that is not

northeast. reagan national in washington and other airports were practically deserted after thousands of flights were canceled. and at sea, the 63-year-old captain from a replica of the h.m.s. bounty was still missing after his ship sank off cape hatteras north carolina. now on the ground reports beginning with the situation in new york city. warren levinson is with the associated press and he joins me now. welcome. so we just reported some of the statistics we've seen some pictures, but tell us what you're seeing with your own eyes. >> well, judy, what you're seeing around new york is a city that just looks paralyzed. what's interesting is really what we can't see which is the kind of damage that the storm surge has wrought underground. so much of what we depend on here in new york is underground. electrical lines. subway lines. steam lines. that was inundated with salt water. we really don't know how long it will be before we get to resume our regular lives once that infrastructure gets put back. you saw people walking around today kind of aimlessly because there's no transit. so if you want t

northeast corridor. airports from the d.c. area, d.c., reagan, washington into philadelphia, and then into new york. jfk and laguardia. northward to boston logan. all of the major airports on the east coast seeing wind gusts during the day on tuesday getting above 60 miles per hour and likely see a four to five-foot storm surge moving into long island. that's a temporary rise in sea levels as hurricane force winds push that wall of water towards the coast and the last phase of hurricane sandy will make this storm into a classic nor'easter that could drop several foot of snow in western new york as cold air rushes down from canada and super charges this storms as we go into monday and tuesday. obviously a big impact for the east coast but some impacts for our local airports. >> the storm could cause those travel delays for people here in the bay area. we want to go to sfo for more on what's going on there. hello. >> reporter: and the airport and the airlines are going to be relying a great deal on their experience. they know pre-planning and pre-staging will be key if the storm is to have a significa

washington. amtrak has suspended service across the northeast. schools are closed today. and the new york stock exchange and nasdaq will also be closed and the united nations has canceled all meetings at headquarters. >> flights have been canceled for the next 48 hours. thousands of flights. boston, new york, philly and washington d.c. just about everything in sandy's sights. so many airlines store planes in those cities, passengers on the west coast will feel the impact throughout the next few days. check flight status well ahead of time and don't go to the airport if it's canceled. four flights have been canceled so far from oakland and san jose. make phone calls, get online and check it out. >> this storm is unprecedented. >> it's something we haven't seen quite a while. compares to hurricane hazel back in the 1950s. some kind of hurricane it is right now. winds extending 500 miles outside of the core of the system. watch as it slides inside the coastline. a lot of the rainfall moving along the coast. more and more people live right near the coastline so the prospect f

washington. not a laughing matter today. the northeast crippled by sandy. 8 million without power, the storm moving very slowly toward canada. the weather channel's hurricane expert brian norcross joins me now. tell us the latest and give us feel for where it is going, where it's been and how unusual this storm has been. >> all right. andrea, this storm is still spinning around, centered here in pennsylvania now. none of them is of consequence. it's all about the weather going on. along the east coast in the new york metropolitan area a few showers around. still a good breeze coming off the ocean, though, and that will slow down some of the power restorations, because some of those winds are gusting 30 miles an hour or more. that's a problem. heavy rains around washington and also around washington, the water from the chesapeake bay is being pushed down now and is still causing some flooding although the general flooding picture is much, much mo improved from yesterday. up into maine there are severe thunderstorms with winds over 50 miles

the president in washington today. as the northeast braces for hurricane sandy. he spent part of the afternoon at fema headquarters. monitoring the preparations for the arrival of sandy. >> this is a serious and big storm. and my first message is to all people across the eastern seaboard, mid-atlantic, going north, that you need to take this very seriously. >> nbc's mike viquiera, live at the white house, we just heard from the president and fema, what else did he have to say? >> well it was interesting, the president decided to did to fema headquarters, a mile south of here from the white house, he said he wanted to give encouragement to the fema workers and get details. and he did, we listened in here, the white house, not only did he make the statement where the prosecute he is was present. but he had a 21-minute briefing. a lot of questions for officials there. he had a state-by-state briefing. among the things he heard, they're expecting a six to 11-foot storm surge in certain areas above ground level. this wind field is going to be felt as far west as the o
