we pull back the picture, that cold air and the low angle of the sun is causing problems in northeastern chinang things stable up there into beijing and the problem is, we have a widespread haze and still the red alerts issued, school was closed on wednesday. especially kinder gearten and elementary schools across the city. scattered showers into shanghai and over towards taipei as well. let's take a look across to europe, where we have several areas we're watching. first i want to mention the area that's getting decent weather today, albeit cold, that's eastern europe. high pressure sufficieitting he keeping it settled. if you look back towards the west, we have this low moving through the mediterranean, and that's making for some rather unsettled conditions out there. the strongest possibly towards italy and extending up into the alps and then separately, always remember the tighter the pressure gradient, the higher the winds. if you just look at this, this gives you a clear idea what i'm talking about here, about 80, 90 kilometers per hour. sustained winds, over in scotland, maybe snow. lon

when we talk about the inversion out here in the northeastern china, this is what we're talking about. cold air aloft, warm air down near the surface. that typically is the way the atmosphere is set up. whenever you get that inversion that means that cold air comes near the surface. cold air tends to sink and that traps that pollution down near the ground. now i'll show you video coming out of beijing. this is what we're talking about. you can see it in this video right here. look at the clear skies near the top of the screen. that is that inversion line i was just talking about here trapping those pollutants down near the surface. we still have red alerts issued here since friday. kindergartens and elementary schools have been closed and suspended since monday to wednesday. also there's been restrictions on vehicles which are allowed only -- only certain vehicles are allowed on alternate days depending on the license plate number. there should be half as many cars on the roadways. so definitely beijing combating this haze. and the weather may be helping out as we go ahead into wednes

across the ocean towards northeastern asia, a classic winter weather set-up really dominating much of japan, even extending down to the south, into taiwan, eastern areas of chinau can see on the satellite, those northwesterly winds coming through, picking up the sea-effect snowfall, even down to the south, nock-ten now down to a tropical depression just because of that dry air and high vertical wind shear coming with it. where all the rough weather is now is back towards the north. if you take a look at japan, in fact, going into thursday morning, about 20 centimeters of snowfall expected. and by thursday night, you could be seeing double that. and even winds down towards the southern japanese islands, up to about 90 to 100 kilometers per hour. with this cold surge, you have the northwesterly winds coming in, ushering temperatures, beijing with of 4, seoul at 2. as we look ahead through the next several days across japan, heading into the holiday weekend, temperatures are going to be remaining rather chilly. you take a look over towards new year's eve and then new year's day, sapporo just a high of 1, even extending down there towards tokyo. and even naha, jus
