the principal runs his school in northern athens with a firm hand. every morning before the school day starts, children are called to attention, and there is a mandatory prayer. the prince of bel takes every opportunity to stress the importance of discipline and self-reliance. >> we have to maintain morale and show we have to -- we can provide the best education possible with the little money we have. >> the school has 350 pupils aged 11 to 15 and no shortage of problems. because of the spending cuts, there are not enough textbooks to go around. instead, the school is being encouraged to use computers and interactive software. >> the ministry has already informed us that from next year on, there will not be any more books. all we will get our -- are cd- rom's. that is a problem for low-income families. they can all afford a computer for every child just so they can do their homework. >> until now, the school has simply made photocopies when there were not enough books to go around, but in this class, there are not even enough copies. their german tea

next, you'll fly to athens and make your way to a scruffy little town in northern greece where there'sare dicey. then, you'll hop on a ferry, unless the trip has been cancelled because of rough seas. that happens all the time, but on a calm day, it can be a very pleasant ride. the monks will tell you it takes years of prayer and soul- searching before they're ready to leave the world for mt. athos. for the likes of us, though, it takes little more than an hour. it was the beginning of lent when we took these pictures, and the ferry was packed with pilgrims from all over the orthodox christian world-- greeks, bulgarians, serbs, romanians, russians. it wasn't long before the first monasteries came into view and we thought we were sailing to byzantium, to a fantasy land of castles and palaces. ( bells ring ) we were headed for vatopedi, one of the oldest and largest monasteries on mt. athos. it had the feel of a medieval city. holiness seemed to seep from the very stones; from the frescoes on the 10th-century church; from the marble font for holy water. but then, there was the monastery's

northern peninsula seeing heavy rain as well as snow in higher elevations. france, germany, precipitation coming and here the only one with thundershowers. temperaturewise, looking at stockholm, 5, moscow 1. athens 18, lisbon, 17 degrees. here's your extended forecast. >>> once again, the top story at this hour -- workers at japan's tsuruga nuclear plant spent the evening dealing with an emergency. a fire broke out and a reactor compound. the workers managed to put out the flames. the tsuruga nuclear plant is located on japan's sea coast. the japan atomic power company says the fire broke out in a makeshift electric device. the equipment is installed at a facility that processes radioactive waste. no radiation leaked out and the fire did not affect the area. the tsuruga nuclear plant has two reactors, both are offline for maintenance. three other fires have broken out there between march 2010 and october of this year. japan atomic power submit add report last month saying it would take new safety measures to avoid this kind of risk in the future. >>> that's our broadcast for this hour on "newsline." we'll be back with more news in half an hour. i'm michio kijima in tokyo. thank you for watching.
