this is the tajapuru river in amazonia, northern brazil. 14 year old jesse and his friend lizet are weaving between these massive boats. but not for kicks. these kids are actually hard at work. they're not the only ones working the river. other kids catch a ride to the passenger ferries. they risk their lives daily just to make a few pennies selling sweets and local jams. what makes this scene even crazier is the fact that the kids are less than two feet away from the sharp, rotating blades of the propeller. this sort of business is unique to this stretch of the river. here the tajapuru is at its narrowest and the boats pass close to the shore. it's the best place for the little canoes to catch a ride to do business. about a dozen canoes have fastened to this boat, bom jesus. the ship's captain maintains speed. he has a schedule to keep. jesse and his friends know all the boats and crews they peddle their goods to. on board the boat there is usually some food put aside for the river kids. some of kids that climbed on board are really young. something that worries the captain. under brazilia
