in fact, far northern california seeing some lightning strikes this morning over the northern sierra nevada. right up in this direction we are seeing some thunderstorms there. a possibility that could spark some more fires as that system moves through. but for here we're calming down. it will be cooler today. usually well into the 80s inland. today as much as 9 degrees below average in santa rosa, still a comfortable 75 degrees. about 86 in livermore. and about 66 degrees in san francisco. that's a look at the weather. back to you. >>> the rim fire continues to burn out of control near yosemite. you can see what it looks like to fly a plane right at the flames. this video is from one of the pilots making a water drop up there in the sierra. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is in our newsroom keeping track of that rim fire. cate, good morning. >> reporter: the rim fire is still spreading in multiple directions and as it continues to grow, so does the concern for firefighters. and that's because you can see some of these flames. we know that some of them are about 6 stories high and right

changes tonight in the skies over northern california. roberta gonzalez is here with the potential of the thunderstorms. >> it's the high-def doppler radar picking up the ground radar. for the most part, all the activity is now developing to the east of the bay area. and to the south. this is the tropical moisture that is lifting up from the desert southwest. the monsoon time. we were picking out what we just saw a couple lightning strikes right there just to the east of highway 395. we've had plenty of thunderstorm activity near the bishop area as we pull on out tahoe area. ook at the greater things have quieted down at this hour, very active with several lightning strikes. because of the dry lightning, not so much because of the heat and the low relativity. it's the high humidity. that's why we have them in effect with the gusty winds, anticipating near the thunderstorm possibilities. that's where we have that potential for thunderstorms tomorrow. we'll talk more about this coming up later on in this newscast. >> all right, thank you. >

changes tonight in the skies over northern california.erta gonzalez is here with where we are seeing the action. >> reporter: in an hour the national weather service will issue a warning for the bay area. right now our hi-def doppler bringing up the berga that is before it hits the landmass. we are picking up modified rain showers outside of yosemite and outside of the greater lake tahoe area. picking up several lightning bolts already this evening in polic pines as well. because of the activity the national weather service says the red flag warning effect sunday midnight, less than an hour from now until wednesday at 3:00 a.m. for most of the highlighted area of the bay area. we had the potential of thunderstorms pro ducing dry lightning and showers, small hail, and some gusty winds to 25 miles per hour. we are going to try to pinpoint the areas where you can anticipate the thunderstorms, ann, that is later on in this newscast. >> thank you. >>> the lightning say concern for firefighters -- is a concern for firefighters battling wildfire

high fire danger remains for far northern california. of the red flag warnings have been lifted for the north bay. if we see anything, it will be very isolated. as for the fog, that will not be isolated at all. it will be widespread as we head out the door. wall to wall clouds that will be stubborn to clearly 10:00. but by noon, it will work its way back to the coast. temperature wise, in the south bay, 70s , and 80s . 78 in san jose. for our inland valleys, upper 80s , no low 90s out there tomorrow, but that will change. 60s and 70s for east bay shore. 66 in san francisco. look at your extended forecast. more typical summer pattern returns. tomorrow afternoon really, by friday, we have very little fog to start the day. temperatures warmer away from the coastline. we will see fluxuations in the temperatures. fog means cooler conditions but will rebound later in the week. >>> still ahead, sports and history made in new york, plus the as battle the mariners. jason has the highlights and all the sports next. >> deep to right and gone. femal

and crews from northern california headed down there. san mateo, santa cruz and monterey fire have sent crews. >> thank you, brian. oakland police are investigating two separate shootings last night. three people were wounded in the gunfire. the latest happened around 11:00. police tell ktvu news, two people were shot. they are both expected to survive. and there was another shooting in oakland two hours earlier shortly before 9:00 last night. investigators say a young man was shot several times. he was then rushed to highland hospital where he's listed in guarded condition. still not clear what led up to the gunfire. police are still looking for suspects in both of those shootings. >> time 7:32. the city of san francisco hopes to get guns off the streets. a gun buy back event takes place tonight between 6 and 8:00 p.m. in the parking lot of u.s. bank. $100 will be paid for guns. $200 for assault rifles. the money is coming from donations as well as city funds. >>> also happening today a controversial gentleman's club is scheduled to ope

red flag warning in effect for the northern california area.omorrow afternoon, so we have a chance for some more of that around here. as it goes off out there some of that wraps around like it did last night or it could wrap around tomorrow night and move across the valley and into the north bay valleys and communities. we'll watch that closely for you. the computer model then has temperatures a little cooler than they were today or about the same. lots of 70s. you're going to see some 80s as well. maybe some low 90s but that's about it. it's not going to get real warm around here. not real hot, you're not going the find upper 90s or mid-90s. just going to be a real nice bay area forecast as we go into the weekend. temperatures not in the triple digits like we saw yesterday. the forecast model tomorrow afternoon about 5:00. it has some thunderstorms popping up in the shore. those showers could get pulled across. the model doesn't do that. the low is going to be pushing inland. it has the potential to push this in. big show last night. hopefully

today he offered final arguments in his trial for the murders of four women in northern california. kpix 5 reporter ryan takeo on the unusual scene in the courtroom as naso made his case to the jury. >> it's one of the most surreal things i have ever seen in a courtroom. >> reporter: as rare as serial killer murder trials go, it's even more rare to have the defendant represent himself. we could not record his closing argument. but former prosecutor steven clark heard it. he said at first naso came off as smart and soft-spoken someone incapable of such crimes. >> what you're seeing is a man who is very disarming. he's engaging. but i think the prosecution is going to suggest that's what makes him so dangerous. >> reporter: naso is accused of killing four prostitutes from 1977 to 1994 by luring them to photography sessions and then would strangle them and dump their bodies. naso argued the prosecution has tried to mislead and confuse the jury and perhaps even tamper with evidence. >> so far, he has not explained one thing other than to demean the prosecution's case and their experts.
