a huge tornado touched down in northern illinois killing one person and injuring seven others. tornados were also reported in iowa and damaging storms hit missouri. the massive twister in illinois wiped out the tiny community of fairdale. an emergency official said every structure in the town is either damaged or destroyed. >> first step is obviously trying to get to the immediate needs of the people that you see and our officers were doing that when they got here then calling in the assistance from other agencyies to help clear the area. the storms forced the cancellations of hundreds of flights in chicago. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: tornado sirens sound as a huge funnel cloud touched down over illinois. one of the areas hardest hit was the town of rowshell about 80 miles west of chicago. the national weather service confirmed at least one large tornado in the area thursday night as a powerful line of storms raked across the state. >> we got the alerts on our phone and all of a sudden heard all the debris hitting the windows and large probably a little bit bigger

i was looking at the maps of the populations of northern illinois just to see how fortunate or unfortunate0 or 40 miles. there was one fatality. this one over mostly rural areas. all big cities were avoided. where our crews are this morning, it's in fairdale. that is literally a small town. it has 3 main roads that go north to south and about two or three roads that go east to west. this is the fairdale area. there's probably only about 20 or 30 structures in the town and they're saying almost none of them exist anymore. you can see the pictures there. this small town community surrounded by farms with a main street. this is all that's left of it. there's hardly anything. our heart goes out to these people. this is horrible enough. we are fortunate as i mentioned with the storm that was this big on the ground this long that it didn't go through any major cities and kill dozens of people. when daylight comes up we'll get a better assessment from the air and get a better view of all these storms. in all in our severe weather outbreak yesterday, about 300 severe weather reports. a lot of wind

many states down towards parts of illinois indiana, louisiana, arkansas and texas, up towards northern illinois that we saw the majority of the activity and this is what we saw was one of those storms. this was a steakhouse and restaurant before picture, and that is the after picture after the tornado moved through, before sunset. this is what we saw across the region, a lot of damage in terms of hail and wind. when you talk about the tornadic activity this is where it was located. up to the north central parts of illinois as well. we are not out of the woods. we have the threat of tornado watch, still in effect for many states. this will continue all the way through the evening, as well as into tomorrow. also we'll have a big problem with flooding. it has been raining in the region for many day, and the thunder storms will continue as we go towards tomorrow. >>> we'll see what the communities in illinois will have to deal with >>> turning to the fatal police shooting in south carolina. authorities released police dash cam video showing the moments before officer michael slager shot and killed
