the early morning operation took place in northern iraq. the pentagon says the u.s. supporting iraqi peshmerga forces at the time. john joined me a short time ago from the white house. what more can you tell us about this dramatic operation? john: well, it was dramatic and the reason was that the intelligence that the americans and the kurdish regional government had received was that the prisoners who were being held in this place were facing the imminent threat of mass execution. that was the trigger for the americans to go into back the peshmerga forces. in the course of what then unfolded, about 70 prisoners were released. 20 of them were parts of the iraqi defense force. 50 others were still being processed. militants were killed and five captured. the americans say that, in the course of which, they gathered useful intelligence that also, as you said, in the firefight that ensued, one american serviceman was hit and later died of his injuries. laura: is this what the u.s. mission to degrade and destroy islamic state is meant to be doing? john: the question was

you cross from northern iraq.three or four hour road journey and all of that journey on the left hand side is the isis front line with the kurdish forces. they're called the ypg. then when you get to an area like hasica, there is close combat in an urban setting between the ypg and isis and, by the way, between the at forces from the assad government. so the kurds and assad government's forces are in an alliance against isis in that particular place, for example, when we were there. it's difficult because each house that you take, isis leave mines, booby traps so they have to be very careful moving forward. some parts of that area are still controlled by the syrian government. and, of course, u.s. forces coming into contact with syrian government forces present some really tricky issues. when we were there, the syrian government was using artillery to attack isis. there is one stage where there was a really tense moment between the kurds and the syrian government forces because the syrian government forces thought

special operations raid in an isis-controlled prison in northern iraq that left one american service member dead. among the open questions, who were the 70 or so prisoners rescued in this helicopter raid. the rescue was conducted at the request of kurdish leaders. that was not all they found when they got there. barbara starr has the latest. >> the pentagon insists the mission was worth it, but for one american family, the worst possible news, an american service member killed when troops went with kurdish force s to a compound in northern iraq. the mission was to try to help rescue a number of hostages that isis was holding at this so-called prison, this compound. the u.s. was supposed to transport the kurds to it. the kurds were supposed to be in the lead. but as they all approached the compound, a fire fight broke out. the kurds came under heavy fire from the isis forces there. it was, at that point, that commanders on the ground made the decision that they would under the rules of engage. ment help the kurdish forces, help keep them safe and they moved in. it was then that the on

our elizabeth palmer is in northern iraq tonight, and she's learned a great deal more about that raid. liz. >> reporter: scott, the secretary of defense ash carter said he authorized this raid when new information, including fresh graves indicated that the prisoners were about to be it executed. so a joint force of kurdish peshmerga fighters and u.s. special operations forces stormed this compound. they went in by helicopter, very early on thursday morning. master sergeant wheeler died when the kurds came under very heavy gunfire as they stormed the compound, and the americans joined in to help. now, this is video posted a very short time ago online by isis, which they say shows the aftermath of this raid. the mission was originally set in motion when the kurds told the americans that they thought some of their fighters who had been paraded as prisoners by isis were inside that compound. we now know they weren't there, but 70 other prisoners were, some of them believed to be it isis fighters and the secretary said that they will provide valuable information about how the group works.

elizabeth palmer is in northern iraq for us tonight. liz. >> reporter: the operation to take mosul back should have gone ahead about six months ago, and yet the iraqi army is stalled more than 100 miles away. commanders here say that the iraqi army simply can't do it alone, but even with american firepower and intelligence, there is another huge problem. the iraqi army is largely shiite. mosul is a sunni city, and that means it's filled with people who actually, crazy as it sounds, support isis, or at least they think rule by isis is preferable to having their city taken by a shiite army backed by a corrupt government in baghdad. bottom line, this is not going to happen any time soon. >> pelley: the two major factions of islam opposed to each other there around mosul. every day, three children are killed and 470 injured in car crashes, and it's often because they were hit by the front seat. kris van cleave has our investigation. >> reporter: 16-month-old taylor warner was riding in the backseat of her family's minivan five years ago whe
