presumably in the beginning was to protect the kurds like they helped to protect the kurds in northern iraq a couple of decades ago and to push back the iranians presumably those were the two main american aims in this kind of idea of a border force that would be made up as this is their way of trying to keep some sort of leverage in syria. is that what they're doing here. certainly it is but if it is it's not very effective like most of what the u.s. has done in syria it's imprecise inconsistent and probably won't work very well because if they're trying to push back the russians and the iranians and at some point possibly work out a normal relationship with the turks who are supposed to be the nato allies the us has not been very clear about any of these really important strategic relationships that now come together in syria so we'll probably see the american explanation for this border force or whatever they want to call it will see that evolve over time. the americans still say that fighting isis is one of their priorities but they've also now added pushing back in iran and the problem
