one thing you can't calculate you write about the army of northern virginia. maybe it's just me or whatever, how to calculate the fighting spirit of these men? you can't measure it. but it's there. there was something about the confederate infantry and others would write about it and he would say later i knew they would be good soldiers we just need organization. others would say they were different. they have this land and spirit that just you look at what they do in this part of time and you say where is it? comes from within. on the other hand, and fairly by history as we look at the army of the potomac. but they were not commanded by long street and jackson the recommended by mcclelland and a few other lesser lights and things like that, it's also leadership. but that day, july feared, as the confederate infantry in the greater land and leave must have believed they could do it because they always had when they step out of there in the fridge he went into the lead and i told you about the division, those are the fellows that stood up and shot at fredericks

but after that he is sitting in northern virginia.e is looking around and he feels he has to take the war across the potomac into maryland the difficulty with that is he is looking at an army that the men are physically just worn out. they have gone many miles. they're going to fall. what is interesting, we know from research of others, probably his army at that time numbered in the neighborhood of 70 to 75,000 as it sat there just south of the potomac river. he had to inform davis of this. he wrote to davis to ask permission. davis is going to grant it. davis in that year, there were discussions within the administration, how can we take the war not into maryland and pennsylvania. they wanted to expand the borders of the confederacy. soberly across that river he is going to risk a great deal. straggly becomes epidemic. they probably lost, and it's hard to estimate. we know thousands of them could not cross the river because there were just physically exhausted or build. more than likely anywhere from 25,000 to 30,000 confederates dur

so that's how they got the job of in command of the army in northern virginia. when he joined the army. he realized very quickly that one, johnson was a bad administrator. so the organization of the army was weak. discipline in the camps was miserable in many ways. hill wrote to his wife at that time, he wrote that hundreds if not thousands of men would sneak away from camp and enjoy the saloons and brothels of richmond on a constant basis. you can't run an army that way. so, lee and turned inherited an army that was not quite ready for what lee is going to expect of them. yet i thought about this when i was doing it, i'm thinking you can't write in the book at all the stars align. people would think, you can't prove all the stars aligned. but in the sense, all the stars aligned for the confederacy on that june day. you have robert e. lee who is of unknown quantity and quality certainly, but there is nobody really in the army of the potomac, union army of the potomac which were at the gates of richmond, that simply -- i know their names, stonewall jackson, james

he tied up traffic in all of northern virginia last friday while this was unfolding. there are allegations that when authorities searched his house, they found a video in his bedroom desk, and on that video he allegedly is seen in an automobile firing on what appears to be the marine corps museum. now, the marine corps museum was one of five -- well, four installations that were hit, five separate incidents last fall by fire. nobody was hurt but there were bullets fire. they allege this video connects him with that as well as forensic evidence. there were spent shell casings in his backpack he dropped at the pentagon. they say those are the same make as the shells used at the shootings at those various military targets in northern virginia last fall. in addition authorities say he was interested in ieds. there were allegation that is in that knapsack there were 20 pounds of i'm moan yum nitrate. >> you really want to know, don't you, was he recruit bid somebody overseas? probably no way to tell. >> they are certainly looking at that very carefully. there was a noteboo

those of you who live in northern virginia might not know that, but that is the truth. there is, however, hope. in the last few years, people have finally woken up. ordinary voters, ordinary citizens have woken up and they are pushing back against the federal overreach. it is not just health care. they are demanding accountability from their politicians and they are measuring that accountability against the yardstick of the u.s. constitution. that is new in our lifetime. they are also demanding that first principle once again be the guidepost for politics and policy in this country. that offers the real hope, not the kind you heard about in 2008, the real thing. if we have people, if we have americans who are thinking in these terms, thinking in first principles terms, before they cast about, before they decide what is a good policy and what is a bad policy, we are going to turn america in the right direction. parties are secondary to that. they are a vehicle to achieve that direction. they are not goal. this reaction by the american people reaches back to when republic

metro area, maryland, northern virginia. why?> well, it's up 4% when the nation is down year over year 5%. it's a big place. it's the eighth largest metro in the country. when you add in baltimore, it's an enormous place. it's one of the top three or four. it's been attracting talented and creative and innovative people. it's not just a government town anymore. and it has great neighborhoods. one of the things that's driven housing staying stable is those houses far out in the sushs and excerpts have declined. even the far away neighborhoods in maryland and virginia have become more walkable. they're adding transit. there's a lot we can learn -- other metros in cities can learn from looking at d.c. and a few college towns, it's a big bright spot -- >> you said college towns. we know that medical and technology drives jobs. when you say there are the things that build infrastructure for cities of the future, are those the key points? >> well, i think d.c. is a big -- everyone thinks it's a government town. it's not. it's a major c

there are concerns about the possibility of other bombs being planted in various locations in northern virginia. now in just the last 40 minutes we heard from the u.s. parks police. an officer describes a person was brought into custody overnight because he was alone at arlington cemetery after dark. >> somebody that was suspicious by being in the arlington cemetery overnight. we have one person in custody we are talking to about that. and we have a vehicle. >> reporter: that vehicle has been under investigation for a few hours. these are some of the police cars around the pentagon. there are mixed reports about what is inside the car. some reports say it was amoan yum nitrate. others say it looked like a bomb. no official word yet. they used a water cannon ons vehicle. police were investigating whether other devices were planted at the memorial and arlington cemetery. those area were closed. the e yogi ma memorial has just reopened. we will stay on top of this for you. >>> a so-called hit list. the fbi says it found the list on the jihad web list. it includes 40 people. including photos of 26

we actually contacted a lot of big companies in northern virginia. there are about 300,000 remains that were challenged. we think it is only about a record-keeping system. we got 20 companies to come together on a pro bono basis. they spent thousands of hours becoming bored with the report on what would be eight step-by- step audit in process to correct this problem the secretary received our report and said they would work with us. it did not cost a dime. we did it all pro bono. we only got support about 120 days ago, which include short term and long term recommendations from cemeteries with a digitized records system, work flow charts to part improve business practices, and basic management techniques. i would like to say the army in those 120 days as a implemented those actions. to our knowledge, they have made small incremental improvements. this is still an area i know is a concern of the committee. this is a disgrace. not quite the story of zak, but let me close on one note -- i want to mention the work done by a virginia high-school student w

[applause] >> thank you, herman. and good morning, and i'm honored and delighted to be here. i -- at the roosevelt reading festival. i don't live around here, so i don't get to visit the roosevelt library very often, but every time i do and every time i visit the house i'm always reminded of henry morgan thaw who was fdr's neighbor here in duchess county and probably knew him as much as anyone and said that roosevelt had a thickly-forested interior which meant that roosevelt was a very rather enigmatic, um, distant, almost secretive man in many ways. but i've always felt that when you visit the house, especially, and walk around and look at it, you get as close as you'll ever get to appreciating franklin roosevelt as a human being and where he came from and what he was and how he became what he did become. and i'm delighted to be here, too, at the roosevelt library which is the first of the great president -- we often forget that franklin roo
