northern virginia educators say even worse the post labor day start puts virginia high schoolers at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to preparation for national ap and ib exams. they have less time to study. in places like the alexandria city public schools with a high percentage of english language learners and economically disadvantaged students educators want the change to create more time for learning. >> we're all pushing for longer days and longer time. but not being allowed to start before labor day we are constrained. >> reporter: virginia's hospitality and travel association will push to keep the law issuing a statement saying a change in the law will have numerous effects including jeopardizing an estimated $369 million including critical jobs and $104 million in wages and benefits. some parents support the change. >> it's an educational issue where the quality of education is concerned i think they should have top priority over business. >> reporter: other parents are reluctant to shorten their summer time with their kids. >> i just like having them home to be able

northern virginia educators are getting ready to renew their fight to get rid of the so-called kings ginia school districts have to begin their school term after labor day. but as julie reports it seems there is growing momentum for change. julie carey? >> reporter: the law has been on the books since 1986 named for the kings dominion amusement park but supported by the entire tourism industry. the law's supporters say the later school start keeps teen workers on the job and keeps vacation crowds coming. school districts have tried and failed year after year to make a change but this year they say could be different. given the choice between riding the roller coasters or heading back to school most students would probably choose the rollercoaster and a later school start. but educators say the law that extends summer break to after labor day has got to go. state senator adam evan will sponsor one of the bills to give school districts the ability to set their own calendar. >> it's time we had educators and school board members make education policy rather than amusement parks. we're on

salt and sand trucks already hitting the roads in northern virginia. >> with wet streets from dupont circle into maryland, a lot of people are thinking ahead to the morning. let's get straight to doug kammerer who begins our team coverage. i guess we're worried about ice, right? >> that's exactly what the worry is. snow coming through the area over the last 12 hours or so. many areas seeing snow pretty much all day. because of the warmer temperatures, we received 1.5 inches of snow. the attention now turns to the temperatures. down below freezing around manassas. also starting to see some fog across the area. that is also going to hamper some travel out there. be careful if you're traveling tonight or if you're traveling in towards tomorrow morning. there could be some areas of temperatures that are below normal during the morning tomorrow, at least below freeze. fairlakes, virginia, got a little bit of snow. >> reporter: temperatures feel like they are already dropping. v-dot crews are expected to mobilize around midnight. they're going to keep a close eye on the roadways. a lot of

weather. >>> new tonight the huntous in northern virginia for a veal robber. what makes this one different -- a a serial robber. what makes this one different is a woman and she's packing heat they say. >> there have been four robberies since december and in each case the female subject has had the same description. investigators hope the video they are looking at tonight will lead them to the late night robber. this is surveillance video from the suspect on her first robbery that occurred december 29th. around 10:30 p.m. the suspect walked into the shell gas station on lee jackson highway in chantilly with a silver handgun and demanded camp she got the money and sped away in a -- cash. she got the money and fed away in a dark colored station wagon. i spoke with a worker who she almost ran over trying to get away. he said she knew the area because she parked away from the cameras and drove it into a neighborhood behind the store. the police's spokesperson bud walker. >> it's unusual to see a woman committing these type of robberies, especially with a fair amou

we're told that there are 770 trucks that are going to be out here in northern virginia in the overnight hours. that's in prince william, fairfax, and loudoun counties doing some pretreating of the roads trying to handle some of those slick spots. now, officials are expecting icy road conditions, possibly for tomorrow morning's commute. they're asking folks to delay their travels, as was said, until about 10:00 tomorrow morning if you're able to to give them time to clear the roads. >> we're more concerned with the ice. we're not going to be getting any snow. but the freezing precipitation, it's much harder to combat than it is snow. but we're out, we've been out really since friday around the clock working. i think the roads are in pretty good shape. we expect to keep them that way. take your time. don't be in a rush. you'll get where you're going to. the main thing is you want to get there safely. >> reporter: so again, virginia department of transportation officials are telling folks if you're able to stay home until about 10:00 tomorrow morning that would be great. a big help to them
