this will be the most snow we've had in five year northern virginia around 6. this is a different storm than like what we had last year where we could deploy and move our equipment around the resources. the commonwealth the entire state of virginia is being impacted tonight. so all of the equipment is out. so i really would stress let our folks do their job, 2,500 crew members, let them get out there, emergency vehicles, let them get their work done. if you have to go out, drive very carally, drive slow. the roads will be slick. what we're very concerned about is then it could turn to sleet and ice which could happen early tomorrow morning, which is going to be just treacherous on these roads. but we have the equipment, we have over 500,000 tons of salt 565,000 gallons of calcium chloride and salt brine. we're prepared for this, but getting folks off of the roads, staying at home as i say, this would be the worst storm we've had in virginia in five yoors. let us do our job and let the virginia department of transportation get the job done for us. >> all right. v

a robbery and shooting investigation in northern virginia. the state of maryland has just ordered the inspection of all bridges following a frightening accident. and we've just gotten an up-close look at the burned metro track from last month's deadly incident. >> but we're going to start with that robbery and shooting outside of the bank in south riding. only news4 was in nearby chantilly when one of the suspects was taken into custody. that other suspect was found shot. deputies say the two robbers tried to hold up an armored car just outside the capital one bank off route 50. a few minutes later the getaway car was pulled over old plains road. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey joins us with new information just in from the investigator ss jules? >> reporter: investigators are still on the scene of the shoot-out that took place in this shopping center parking lot today. it was a shoot-out between two suspects and two armored truck security guards. the security guards won that battle but the suspects were captured later thanks in la

northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg is at the live desk with more on the new accusations against michael gardener. jeff? >> alison, this is amazing. in court today, prosecutors are revealing shocking allegations against gardener accusing him of pursuing a plot to murder two young girls who were set to testify against him in court. prosecutors claiming that while in prison in 2013 gardener reached out to a fellow inmate about trying to find someone to have the girls killed. that inmate then reached out to authorities which then investigated the matter thoroughly. prosecutors cannot say whether or not the girls' lives were ever in danger but they will say that the possible threats were taken very seriously. gardener is a former democratic party official in falls church. he was in prison after being convicted in 2011 of molesting two young girls. you may remember that ruling was overturned by the virginia supreme court and gardener was released but he was then arrested again last october for allegedly sexually abusing a different young girl in 2009. that girl a family member. garden

northern virginia reporter david culvert just stepped out of the courtroom with an update for us.>> reporter: jim, this is a big win for the family of john gear. essentially today's order now forces the fairfax county police which is right across the street here to release the internal affairs records on the officer responsible for shooting and killing john gear. that officer is adam torres. he shot and killed gear on august 29th 2013 while gear stood unarmed in the doorway of his springfield home. police said he later had a gun on a nearby stoop. for 16 months fairfax county police refused to release any information on the criminal investigation, even withholding it from prosecutors. in december, the judge ordered police to make public the 12,000 documents and reportings from the criminal investigation. they say just five months before killing gear officer torres had a meltdown with a prosecutor in a separate court proceeding. now, today's ruling means that the gear family and their attorneys will get access to what if any action the police action took against torres after that i

northern virginia bureau chief julie carey now with advice from the police. julie? >> reporter: mm-hmm. sidewalk's a little quiet right now but this area near shirlington has a lot of pedestrians and cyclists during the afternoon. wakefield high school about a mile down the road there, barcroft rec center nearby. but after hearing of this attack people might be looking over their shoulder for a while. this woman says she never feels unsafe when she walks her dogs along south four mile run drive so she's surprised to hear a teenager was groped here monday. >> i didn't know that. and we always walk around here and i never feel -- felt dangerous around here. >> reporter: police say the young woman was headed home from nearby wakefield high school when she was sexually assaulted around 4:15 p.m. it handed within sight of these apartments, a gas station, and a bike path. >> a 17-year-old high school senior walking home she was approached from behind and had her butt grabbed. very scared and frightened she ran to her residence, contacted her mother who then called police

sources are telling us a woman is on life support in northern virginia after she was tasered in police custody. now, sources say the woman was being transported from fairfax county to alexandria to face unspecified charges there. we're told she resisted deputies and staff and it got to the point where one of the deputies had to use a taser on her. medical personnel were there on the scene, and the woman was transported to another area in the fairfax county detention center. once there, she had what's being described as a significant medical emergency. they rushed her to the hospital and she is now on life support in the intensive care unit. we expect to get more information from fairfax county any minute now. stay with us here on news4 and follow us on the nbc washington app. at the live desk i'm chris lawrence. >> thank you, chris. >>> a new confrontation in the making between virginia's general assembly and the governor. the house is now set to release its budget plan on sunday. it calls for more than $124 million for mental health care coverage and targeted safety net services. it w

and where did he learn all -- that he would be had of the northern virginia army? >> i'm glad you asked because robert e. lee action was an engineer. he did graduate second in his class and u.n. into the injured and that was considered the most prestigious branch of the army could go into. to go back to what i said at the beginning to respond was coming through when we vote in 1837 he was on his way to st. louis to perform to work on the mississippi river. during the mexican-american war that he really puts his skill to work because engineers played an important role in deciding where armies could go and lee had what's called an a picture the account to account for typography and recognize that he can see routes around the mexican army that other people can't see. he plays an indefensible role in that but his background as an engineer comes back during his early campaign in the civil war. we can have this image of robert e. lee was successful in the civil war. that's actually not true. his first campaigns were disasters. he was sent to western virginia in 1861 and
