when i really began my work, even though i was living in northern virginia much of my work was centered in washington, d.c. and the danger of that was there wasn't a really intentional effort to build good grassroots organizations that were organizing around different issues in the northern virginia area. and when i began to get more involved with those organizations that did exist and that were extremely effective, what we realized was many of us -- so for those of you who are from this area, northern virginia is a pretty liberal progressive region. right? we always vote blue. we didn't really pay attention to the teens of policies that were being implemented right under our noses. as it turns out, only a handful of i.c.e. detention facilities that contract with the federal government to hold minors, three of them were in virginia. right? and we were electing people who were democrats who were doing this. they were partnering and collaborating with groups that were doing violence to our communities. and a big part of why that pressure wasn't being applied until fairly recently was beca
