when i really began my work, even though i was living in northern virginia much of my work was centered in washington, d.c. and the danger of that was there wasn't a really intentional effort to build good grassroots organizations that were organizing around different issues in the northern virginia area. and when i began to get more involved with those organizations that did exist and that were extremely effective, what we realized was many of us -- so for those of you who are from this area, northern virginia is a pretty liberal progressive region. right? we always vote blue. we didn't really pay attention to the teens of policies that were being implemented right under our noses. as it turns out, only a handful of i.c.e. detention facilities that contract with the federal government to hold minors, three of them were in virginia. right? and we were electing people who were democrats who were doing this. they were partnering and collaborating with groups that were doing violence to our communities. and a big part of why that pressure wasn't being applied until fairly recently was beca

. >> reporter: we've been driving around here in northern virginia for the last couple of hours checking out those roadnd ions. i can tell you from personal experience the roads are very wet. they're omsty. there's pooling and hydroplaning. alsooahere are several here in fairfax county that are closed due to flooding. this is one of them. we're on burke lake road at kill kenny lane. we saw a number of drivers taking the chance and driviug th standing water. this is an overflow of berk lake so there's a potential for this water to be quite deep and to be moving quite quickly. we also checked out flooding on hunter mill road at lawyers over in the oakton area here in the county. weaw cars driving through theoo fld roadway. fairfax county has a listf road closures. righre now t about a half a dozen roads that areed cl there have also been a few water rescu rescues. fortunately everyone who did get stuc was able to be rescued and everyone is safe now. again, fairfax county police and other jurisdictions are warning people sf there arens up saying the road is closed, make sureou abide by that
