the most democratic region of the state's northern virginia. northern virginia, depending on how you define the region, is about one third of the entire statewide vote now. so they turn out. back in the old days, and i have seen virginia since the early 50's, virginia was democratic. but, very conservative if democratic. -- very conservative democratic. southern democratic. it switched to republican in the 1970's getting with governor lyndon holden who was elected in 1979, the first republican governor of the 20th century. if democrats get their vote out, they will win because there are more democrats than republicans. the problem democrats are having or giving the -- is getting the vote out. republicans are much more enthusiastic because they think they have a candidate who can win. they have not been in office for 10 years. host: our guest is larry sabato. we have a line for virginia residents, 20274 880003. republicans, 20274 eight 8001. independents and others, 202748 out of -- 202 748 8002. i wanted to ask you about a poll on issues import

>> were certainly seeing it in the counties in northern virginia, education issues, a major issue in the county looking like it's much, much better. also republicans are doing better with independent style and explain into this race and a major factor into this race but it may also be better because intensity of democrats turning out in the election is much lower. that is a factor that will -- not one 100% vote on election day so who does vote will matter and will show up different results in past elections. paul: if youngkin pose this out, one of the lessons going forward for republicans in 2022? >> number one, lesson is the factor of incumbent president acting as gravity and pulling down intensity.on their boat. traditionally, that's what happens and that will be a factor there. how much is the trump factor in terms of motivating the democrats going to be a factor? is the habit of american voters to be better at pointing with pride which is why the incumbent parties voters tend to be less intense. they will have to get a message out there. right now biden is in a difficult position

what's been going on in northern virginia schools.en ground zero for a parent standing up for the rights of their children, who had their schools open. to not be tied to political agenda, but instead to have a real curriculum to have explicit material taken out of their kids teaching materials. all of a sudden, laura, we see that our students aren't safe anymore. we see a school board in the commonwealth's attorney may be covered up a real violent crime, sexual assault in schools. tomorrow nights, we are bringing people together all over mark northern virginia and we will lay out a plan. virginia kids can't wait any longer. terry mcauliffe's program, he specifically acknowledged that he believes parents don't have a right to be engaged in their kids education. in fact he wants government to stand between parents and their children. if tomorrow night, we will lay out the steps forward in order to go to work for virginia's kids now. that they can't wait until january 15th. we will go to work for them tomorrow night. >> laura: is a sign

laura: in a sign that this is hurting him even in liberal northern virginia terry mcauliffe is trying to portray him as a champion of parent involvement in education. >> as parents we have always been involved in our kids education. we know good schools depend on us. that is why we want you to hear this from me. glenn youngken is taking my words out of context. i always value concerns of parents. that is why we scale back standardized testing, expanded free k and invest $1 billion in public schools. laura: i have no idea how scaling back standardized testing helps kids, that lowers the bar but he said you are taking him out of context. i watched the debate. are you taking them out of context? >> the nation watched this debate and he quintupled down on it, set it 6 times since then the parents don't have a role in their kids education and now, parents across the commonwealth of virginia are standing up saying we have a fundamental right to be in our kids education and to have a say over what happens with curriculum come to see what happens in that building assuming it is going to be sa

reporter: earlier this week was present joe biden in northern virginia, last night was vice presidentala harris in virginia here while mcauliffe maintains about local issues from races on national with democrats trying to tie when jumping to former president trump embossed ten percentage points last year. even the vice president acknowledging national consequences of this race. >> it's a close election and for what happened the rest of the country. what happens in virginia will in large part, determine what happened in 2022, 2024 and on. reporter: the democrat campaigning throughout the day for terry mcauliffe, a couple of more events to end up the date and he's going to spend a few days in the southeastern corner of the state from richmond and northern virginia trying to get democrats to the polls. eric: all right, thank you. arthel: more on the issues driving this with lauren wright, political scientist princeton university. first of all, if i'm sitting in plano or petaluma or prime, why should i care about the outcome of the governor's race in virginia? >> that's a great framing fo

in northern virginia, former republicans who aren't that adamant about that.estion does this work? if it doesn't work for terry mcauliffe that needs to be a big wake-up call for democrats. trump scare mongering isn't enough. >> that's a big question and terry mcauliffe is not an unknown, started with the clintons, ran the party, has been the governor there, so he has that potential distinction as not a "generic democrat" and still struggling to your point the other side of this race, headline here, biden easily won virginia, why is mcauliffe struggling? experience works against him in a political environment that continues to favor outsiders. your view? >> yes, look, i think virginia has a long history of this. it's the first election, this weird off year, to be kind of a check, right, any time a president one party goes in, there's always this unhappiness with obama in '08 and the stimulus, they swerved the other way and trump they swerved the other. so there's this tradition of voters, these sort of less partisan swing voters deciding they want to give the o

and then northern virginia, they run up the score a little bit. we'll see if those dynamics are still at play on tuesday. traditionally for the past two presidential cycles, that has been the case. tyler, to the point of enthusiasm, part of the reason why some activists are not so enthusiastic right now is because they're disappointed with president biden on certain issues including climate which we just talked about with the congresswoman. jade becay, a climate activist said, quote, president biden started very strongly by rejoining the paris agreement, but it's been frustrating the last few months, things have slowed down. joe manchin is holding hostage our survival on planet earth for his own political career, and people are really questioning if biden will stick to his promises. tyler, how can biden do more to show that he's actually going to live up to some of those promises he made on the campaign trail? >> yeah. i think there's two fronts on this point. the first one you made, he is somewhat hostage to the 50 democratic senators in the sena

even in northern virginia -- i live in mcclain. in northern virginia. you go to the local gas station and you are stunned at how much you pay. and at the store i talked to somebody who paid more than twice as much for a chicken as they paid 3 months ago. t if you are a normal person, the best phrase to describe the democrats may be it ain't working. it ain't working on the border with inflation or energy. they get a 54% increase with heating costs in maine they will be annihilated nextn year in maine. >> sean: i should not have asked the question because i lived it with you. before you became speaker i was the mc the night you became speaker of the house. republicans were out of power in the house of representatives for 40 long years. not only did you bring republicans back into power, but they have been in play ever since. things have changed. ii would hate to think of 40 years in darkness again. sometimes -- i can't foresee a time where new york or california ever goes red again. i can't see it.me >> oh, i can. look, things change dramatically. in '94

and northern virginia, suburbs outside of virginia, too. these are areas that over the last ten or 10 years and particularly during the trump presidency really moved dramatically towards the democratic party and the goal for glenn youngkin and for republicans has been they don't think they're going to win a lot of these blue counties in the suburbs that you see on the map here, but can they cut back, can they peel back some of those gains made in the trump era. here is louden county outside of washington, d.c. this is a big suburban area. joe biden won it by 25 points last year. take a look at the trends in loudan county. in 2016, hillary clinton won it in 2017. less than a decade ago, loudoun counties was a swing county. what glenn youngkin and the republicans are trying to do, they don't think they're going to win loudoun county. they're trying to come closer than donald trump did. if they can do that, if they can peel back some of those gain that's democrats made in places like loudoun county in northern virginia, then they have a shot a

there's one in the army of northern virginia. northern virginia is a statue of stonewall jackson and on his horse fire-eater at the battle of shiloh. for davis shiloh was a turning point of the war. albert c. johnson was his friend and more than that he was his role model. famously said if people were asking for johnson's approval if he weren't of the confederate -- he had nothing to give you. his friend died of shiloh but it's worse than that first day of shiloh beauregard sent a message saying we want a complete victory. davis's confidence was restored for beauregard to say well that in go as planned. we lost them by the way your favorite general is dead and now i'm in charge. so when davis' mind and the mind of many people johnson had lived they would have one shiloh. beauregard would have called off the attack. they have this big statue dedication of the tumulus. one of which is randomly gibson. gibson was a brigade commander in chai leng a political ally. gibson and his time believed in equal voting and civil rights for peop

the suburbs of northern virginia, the suburbs of richmond, the metropolitan areas in virginia that have look at northern virginia, for instance. couple places we could go here. but let's show you luiten county. it's a biggie. it's growing really quickly. this is suburban, ex-urban so you see joe biden won here by 25 points over donald trump in 2020. check out the trend in loudoun county. you see a lot of this around northern virginia. hillary clinton won by 17, 25 for the dems in 2020, 17 in 2016. that's with the trump presidency did to loudoun county. look at this. when mitt romney was the republican nominee in 2012, republicans almost won loudoun county so this is the trump effect in loudoun county, and this is the trump effect, you see it in northern virginia. you see it in suburbs in virginia. so, what terry mcauliffe is doing, he believes what you say about donald trump and january 6th, that's why he's saying trump over and over a thousand times a day, he thinks that is what's going to keep a place like loudoun county voting more like it did in 2020, less like it did in 2012. now,

in motion, where you're right, youngkin wants to be able to say, you know, those things that northern virginiaay from trumpism and trump, particularly, that makes them feel comfortable with him. but at the same time, say to the rest of the state, particularly the southwestern portions of the state, i'm with you! i'm a trump guy. see, i got his endorsement. what muddles that is your point about the president coming into it and saying, hey, this is my guy, too. the reason trump does that, he's seeing and hearing the same thing about this race, that republicans can win. what trump is betting that "a," youngkin wants, "b," i want to be able to claim credit for the win that sets up the narrative for 2022 around the country for those races that republicans trying to shy away from, do the heisman with trump a little bit. but in reality, that's not necessarily how the narrative is going to go. >> see, now, this kind of feels like the gavin newsom recall election in california to me. knowing that youngkin is close to mcauliffe, that is going to gin up the base of the democrats and they're going to say,

and even though northern virginia is insulated by the swamp, in terms of jobs, there's a sense, again, gas prices are up the shipper market price. people aren't feeling confident and, and your to laura's point is kind of funny because you watch wall street is still having records, right. but it's, that's how people feel. i say the number that intent, the most intense issue is, is the education issue. and it's, it's not really c r t, it's this, it's this notion that somehow parents have said we want to chance him a call. if i had someone say this is a really florida's answer would say the most infamous comments, since legitimate rape by todd akin was terry mcauliffe saying parents shouldn't have a say over education, which is what he said at the debate 2 weeks ago. and for a change, the democrats are paying a price for early voting. here we have early voting, and moms are going to the polls saying what and younger the standards say, and i'll spend more money on schools, i'll do more things. so education is 2nd, i would say now the problem for the democrats and laura did put this right

[laughter] this myth command the army through the rest of the battle a seven pines the second day of the battle. and johnston is going to recuperate in regimented and asked downtown and his wounds are pretty severe so is out of commission for quite a long time. in the meantime, lee will eventually take over the army and establishes success in his hard-hitting reputation. and the seven days battles, they will drive the union army away from richmond take the army back into northern virginia and they invade maryland and solidify his reputation in virginia command and so when johnston is finally able to take the field again as recovered, what do we do with him rated and things are falling apart for the confederacy elsewhere so johnston is going to be sent to the last.

rich: earlier this week it was president joe biden in northern virginia. last night it was the vice president kamala harris in southern virginia. she headlined an event in norfolk, the race has gone national and harris warned against republican rule here in virginia. >> this is no joke. you think they don't think and i'm watching this around the country, if we can take virginia we can do this in a lot of other places? don't let virginia be an experiment. who is governor matters on an essential issue like voting rights. rich: current governor northam was here short while ago and congressional democrats, cane and clyburn and representative barbara lee all trying to push get the democratic vote out ahead of election day and on election day tuesday. arthel: the stakes are high. you mentioned pharrell, all i can sing is happy in my head. you know the song. rich edison -- >> rich: yeah. arthel: thanks, rich. eric. eric: tuesday night someone is going to be happy, someone else won't be but the question is who will it be in the race this comes as brand-new washingt

mcauliffe is in the northern art of the state close to the d.c. suburbs, that is manassas, virginia he'll come back down here and then head back up to northern virginia in a race that has become very tight. a recent washington post poll had this race essentially tied with education now sharing the list of top voter concerns along with the economy. the post poll also said in september education voters favored terry mcall cliff by 33 if percentage points, now glenn youngkin leads by 9, a subject that dominated the mcauliffe's conversation this morning on "meet the press." >> he's got a don donald trump, betsy devos take money out of public schools, it them into private schools, that doesn't work in virginia. and that's why parents supported me when i veto thed that bill, and i have a plan to move our education system forward. >> reporter: the former president in tying him to glenn youngkin has also been a part of the close of the mcauliffe campaign. he's been campaigning with several national democrats this week, jim clyburn, vice president kamala harris and president biden. the democ

police in northern virginia suburbs are making their presence visible and especially concern because tuesday is election day for the virginia's governor race, the fbi did not comment on record but say they take all threats to public safety very seriously. ♪ ♪ anita: with glenn youngkin in the lead in latest fox news polls in the virginia governor's race, mcauliffe has days to win over voters. joining us now are two folks who are watching this very closely. we have guy lewis and spot scott bolden. thank you for joining us today. >> thank you for having us. anita: it is political theater at its best. you have the well-known, very seasoned politician and former democratic governor terry mcauliffe who really should have had the race in the bag against a novel politician glenn youngkin, successful businessman. he's 8 points ahead. we can put that up on the screen if we have it. okay, and other polls have the race a little bit closer, but guy, let me ask you first for your take on what happened here with this race or what is happening with this race? >> so anita, i actually traced this lead

. >> amy rogers is a northern virginia mom turned education activist. she says she is proud toe speaking up at her local school board meeting. >> it's a free country last time i checked and we still have freedom of speech and we are taxpayers of this county. our children go there. >> rogers and other conservatives say they are fired up after attorney general merrick garland's recent memo urging the government to do more to protect school board members. the biden administration says it is stepping in because it believes education officials nationwide are facing increasing threats of violence as parents voice outrage on a number of issues. >> regardless of the reasoning, threats and violence against public servants is illegal. that's what he was conveying from the department of justice. >> the government is also urging the public to report threats to the fbi, a directive that has republicans including texas senator ted cruz outraged. >> the attorney general told the department of justice that those parents of school boards should be treated as threats and

he's been in northern virginia as well.the suburbs of this area here, you know, it is a type of place where you see an awful lot of mcauliffe signs, but as you continue to drive, you also see a lot of glenn youngkin signs in that area, along with other republicans and democrats who are running for office here in tuesday's election. it was at the house of a campaign supporter, set up basically a little rally in the backyard there. a congresswoman introduced him. it's the congresswoman's congressional district. she flipped to it the democrats in 2018. and it still remains close. mcauliffe is intensifying his criticism of his republican challenger, trying to tie him to former president donald trump and claiming a youngkin win here would be a mess for this state. >> the guy's clueless, but he's dangerous. he's very dangerous. he's been endorsed by trump nine times. trump is calling into his town hall meeting tomorrow night. trump said the other day quote glenn youngkin will do whatever we tell him to do. >> that's been a large

this will be the key to whether it works really or not, he's trying to sort of use this in the northern virginiadon't you want a say in your kid's education? terry mcauliffe knows politics. when you say something like that, it is going to get used against you. >> stand by for the attempted cleanup. chris, this race, as we said with the recall in california, and as we likely will say about every race between now and the end of time is being viewed as a referendum to some degree, not just on trump, but on biden. is that true, one, and where does the race stand? >> yeah, so, what terry mcauliffe is trying to do is make it a referendum on trump. saying that trump and youngkin are the same. donald trump is very unpopular in the democratic base. i think the problem for terry mcauliffe is as prominent as donald trump remains, he is not the president. joe biden is the president. and biden's numbers in virginia and virtually everywhere else have sunk. and particularly have sunk among independents. he won independents by 14 points in 2020 over donald trump. his ratings among independents in the high 30s.

that is why president biden came to northern virginia and he won the commonwealth by ten percentage points the democrats the mcauliffe campaign is going after trying to awaken them, if you came to a vote for joe biden last year. come to vote for terry mcauliffe this year. youngkin was in roanoke today. he accused his opponent of just bringing in all these democrats who don't live here saying there's no enthusiasm. but they are particularly trying to go after those biden voters. >> jeff zeleny, thanks. >>> let's discuss. alice, you just heard biden comparing youngkin to trump and to the big lie, the insurrectionists. for the most part youngkin has been trying to avoid being tied to former president trump. but now it appears trump is going to come to virginia some way. it's unclear but in a new statement, trump said, quote, arlington, see you soon and then trump's director of communications said, details will be released when appropriate but trump coming to arlington, virginia, northern virginia. that's wquite the tease. doesn't say when he's coming. could be for christmas shopping for all i
