north shore-lij is now northwell health. steve: in . vitamin d may heal damaged heart. it can improve the heart's ability to pump blood. dari: dr. manny in the house. >> very interesting. this is preliminary data. i want everybody to listen to this. it's good for muscles. it's a good anti-inflammatory, also. it's really utilized very effectively by the human body. now, congestive heart failure is one of the most common problems that people get over the age of 65. this is when the heart begins to fail. it's pumping weak and there's medication. there's defibrillators that we use, implantable defibrillators. now preliminary studies show for some people, vitamin d 3 improved their pumping action from 26 percent to 34 percent. you may argue 26 percent, 34 percent, that's not a big increase in pumping. any amount of increased pumping by the heart in people over the age of 65 who have congestive heart failure is a big deal. the next step -- this was in a small sample study. the next step is to do a much larger number of patients and see if, indeed, this trend of that increase
