it is expected to weaken, as it does move off to the northwest. but still, you're going to be seeing pretty strong tropical storm strength winds across okinawa. and you could see three to six meter high waves. i think that will be the major threat as it turns to the northeast, it impacts mainland japan by friday and actually into saturday later on this week. not moving very fast at all, this storm system. it's going to bring some heavy rainfall out here. a lot of the moisture gets pushed off to the northern per rify. what it means is we'll see a widespread area of heavy rainfall. this stops right at about the 72-hour mark. if you just extrapolate that and move it to the northeast, that's how much rainfall we're going to be seeing, even extending over to tokyo later on in the week. we definitely want to keep an eye on that. we do have this low pressure area coming out of mongolia. that will affect our storm system thursday into friday. but for now it's dragging a lot of cold air behind it. kuala lumpur, just of there for your high. south into the n

it's heading off to the north-northwest at 20 mph. a fairly slow job off to the north-northwest. that means many people will continue to be impacted by the system all the way into sunday evening. flooding rains and strong wind gusts are expected with this, and it's coming into a very highly populated area. when you think about the state of california, the entire population of california will be impacted with this system. as we get you in across the u.s. we'll watch a cold front. a cold front moving through the mississippi valley. we will see heavy rainfall there. also for rain showers, the area has been sitting here off the new england coast line that has been throwing moisture in. it's been dry and breezy but further south that's where the persistent rain has caused flood advisory. we'll have to continue to watch out for that. expecting an additional inch or two, but here except coastal flood advisories to remain in place through this evening and it will finally be lifted. here is a closer view of the rain and thunderstorm activity. now starting to make its move into mississippi

northwest winds in the area bringing this drier and cooler air mass in. at least for the time being. it's going to be a cooler week than we've seen in the last week or so. down across the southeast, the front's moving offshore. however it's going to start a little bit in the atlantic ocean, moisture developing somewhere over east of florida in the next 24 hours. could develop an area of low pressure along that front and it may bring us, may, not 100% chance, but may bring us more clouds and some more rain here late wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday, it may just hang up along the coast. the front will slow down. that's the problem. here's the front and it really doesn't go anywhere. that low pressure indicated by the models offshore bringing rain, maybe just west of the baltimore area. that could last with the northeast winds may not get out of the 50s to low 60s by the middle or end of the week. northeast wind 10 to 15. bay temp around 70. tonight not a bad night. cloud break up. some 40s. 70 degrees tomorrow, less humid. beautiful day tomorrow. cl

magnitude 5 earthquake struck about 2 hours ago, 35 miles west-northwest of eureka.that is one of the hot spots for earthquakes around california. and magnitude 5 is getting into the moderate range. so that's -- it certainly felt, it was offshore 32 miles west- northwest of eureka. that's in the very complicated mendocino triple zone up here which is where the san andreas fault ends, dives under some of the continental plates that are offshore and it's also partially a subduction zone. there's a reason you have the cascade range and volcanos up there and one of the reasons is because of earthquakes like this where the pacific plate dives under the continent and then results in the chain of volcanos that runs all the way up into canada. this is just one little reminder that it is very seismically active in that part of california and a 5.0 is getting up there. 70 degrees at concord right now. san francisco 54. santa rosa 68 degrees. by the way i haven't heard of any reports of damage. but 35 miles away from a magnitude five there could be a little bit. we'll check int

the nfl right now holding it all league meeting in northwest washington. >> the united indian nation is asking the redskins to change its name. brianne carter is joining us with details. that conversation about being named is still going on here inside the ritz-carlton in northwest washington. the group gathered today and is calling on the nfl to stop using what they call a racial slur as one of the names. the hometown team name for redskins. the united indian nation as well as other supporters of the change of name and mascot. they got an earful of discussion on all of this. this is the exact same place where the nfl will be having its fall meeting over the next couple of days. a representative for the indian nation said the redskins name is divisive.and de president obama said that if i were a team owner and i knew that there was a name of my team that was attending a sizable group of people i would think about changing it. a number of people talked about that today and praise the president for weighing in on this. if they are saying it is nfl commissioner's time to speak up, too.
