most of the protests have been in north and northwest baltimore. but two fires, including one large one, one of the two fires has been reported tonight is a three-alarm blaze. that's no reason for me to say that these fires are related to the protests that we have seen today. we saw smaller fires set today, including one police cars -- or excuse me two police vehicles burned. but this large blaze with multiple fire companies responding in baltimore, we don't know if that is related to the rioting, to the protests and to the state of emergency that's been called by the governor. we'll keep you posted as we learn more. there's a lot going on in the news right now and we are keeping an eye on all of it. we'll have several live reports this hour and talking with a city official. we'll be talking with my colleague from here at msnbc, al sharpton, who as an activist, has been at the center of organizing efforts of people killed by police. and he also -- reverend sharpton has time and time again been called on by families of people who have been killed by

we're in northwest baltimore. trying to get a pronunciation on that. at one point, at some point, a gentleman who was working security point blank range, 10 feet away. somebody threw something at him. it looked like a water bottle or something. maybe it had rocks in it. popped him in the head. he's ok. but what i want to do not only do i want to move on from here the next thing that occurred richard, let's go this way. the police did not show up until maybe five minutes ago and everybody cleared up. i'd say maybe 20 or 30 minutes into this another group of folks came over to this rite aid pharmacy over here. so first they tried to hit this hardware store and couldn't get in the hardware store very easily. somebody crawled through there and got a few things. let's go over here real quick. the rite aid pharmacy is where things got really dicey. folks had to rip off -- there were maybe 10 to 15 men, large guys who came through here. and just ripped the whole front of this apart. it took a tremendous amount of force to get this locked door off. they came i

that church is near schools, near a large mall in northwest baltimore. when school let out today, this happened. local leaders on the ground tonight in baltimore say these clashes with police will began when schools let out and ankids flood the out onto the streets. people also set cars on fire smashed a police cruiser. they looted stores. they hurled things at police who responded with rubber bullets and the an least one case by hurling projectiles back at the protesters. among the 15 officers reported to be injured one was reported this afternoon to be unconscious, nonresponsive. two officers we're told remain in the hospital tonight. the governor of maryland larry hogan has declared a state of emergency and activated the national guard. the city curfew in baltimore will be in effect for a week starting tomorrow at 10:00 p.m. the schools will be closed in baltimore tomorrow. and even at the looting continued till late tonight, the mayor tonight pledged to restore order in baltimore. the mayor saying she was heart broken by the destruction in her hometow

you are there in the streets in northwest baltimore when the cvs was burning. what was the scene like? how did it get to the point it got to? >> reporter: it started off with police expecting teenagers to start rioting or attempting to start a riot around 3:00 and they shut down the mall before that happened. and sure enough these kids all showed up and they were basically just throwing rocks and running away from police who put on their riot helmets. then about a mile away in downtown west baltimore, it was a lot more chaotic. stuff was on fire. people were looting stores and it was just a much more different scene. >> it seemed when things started again, it started around 3:00, around when school was letting out. it was after the funeral. there had been some activity on social media according to several people that there was an event planned at the mall. clearly the police anticipated that and a group of young people showed up. that's where we saw the rock throwing standoff. there were all sorts of projectiles being thrown as far as we could tell. what did it

captured video of the burning liquor store in northwest baltimore on his cell phone. he and other neighbors worried about the woman who lived next door with her 7-year-old disabled son. she asked that we not identify her. >> i feel like that i was suffocating suffocating. >> reporter: neighbors say just before the fire they saw people going in and out of the store grabbing everything they could, including the cash register liquor bottles and lottery tickets. she said she and her child barely escaped when the smoke and flames started. >> ain't nobody take two seconds to think that my son was going to lose his home and he did. he can't do nothing for himself and i don't appreciate it. >> reporter: another femaleamily is displaced. >> it impacted my family yes, and my job. i had to be out of work for two days. i'm a maryland state worker also and i live paycheck to paycheck you know. this is just sad. >> reporter: also lost in the fire, this wheelchair a 7-year-old boy was cerebral palsy. he isn't speak or move his arms or legs. >> he smiles that's good enough for me. >>

students got out of school on monday afternoon and started to move toward the mondawmin mall in northwest baltimore. that's where they attacked some officers and where some of the officers got injured. it's been going on since that time. i'll have john pan over here again as the police try to reinforce this area of north avenue. we were about a block or two that way. we saw a lot of looting going on and no police presence at that time. we saw a tavern being ransacked. we saw a liquor store being ransacked. so a lot of that has calmed down a little bit at this point. we're still told that fire units are being attacked by rioters. so this city is not out of danger yet. >> yeah, certainly not. we've got that curfew going to be in place from tomorrow at 10:00 p.m. we'll see what that changes. when you compare this to what happened in ferguson, what's your impression of how the baltimore police are handling this? >> reporter: well, the police have been kind of in a reactive mode because they have just not been able to get ahead of this violence. it's very hard to predict of course where the violence is

>> i lived at one point in northeast baltimore and northwest baltimore, i did. and i live outside, we live in the suburbs now. but baltimore city -- >> how did you get out? >> how did i get out? we just worked. and that's the interesting thing. you hit on something. you try to work as hard as you can to stay away from what is anticipated or expected for you as a black person in this country, unfortunately. and it's hard work that gets you out of that. but i'm going to tell you this. i go into that community. my hairdresser is just blocks from penn and north. you know, when i was a kid, there was a nightclub that we used to frequent on that street called odell's. the school headquarters is down the street. you also have this wonderful community called bolton hill, a rich enclave of brownstones just blocks from penn and north. and then you also have -- circumstances that an african american neighborhood? >> no, no it's not. no it's not. >> it was gentrified? >> no, it's not. but there is regentrification in baltimore, particularly when it comes to the harbor area.

but i'm not convinced of that honestly, because it wasn't just in northwest baltimore. d looting in other neighborhoods huge fire all the way on the other side of town of a community center that was under construction in east baltimore. there is a fire burning this morning in southwest baltimore of a vacant building. so these little skirmishes continue to happen. we don't know where the national guard will be deployed. i don't know if they have gotten in to certain neighborhoods. my guess is that they will spend a lot of time in that area of west baltimore that had such chaos going on yesterday. >> and we had reports, jane miller, of johns hopkins hospital having some security breaches potentially. also just locking down and students at the university being put on alert and asked to stay in. jane miller, thank you very much. >> jane, thank you. this is live, you're see something live pictures this baltimore. but mika, and this is what is hard to gauge in 2015 when you're following news stories on television. jane was talking about how most of the violence was this west b
