cooking fire broke out in the second story of this three-story apartment building on 5th street in northwest d.c. the residents escaped. one firefighter had to be taken to the hospital with minor injuries. pretty unusual for the firefighters to rescue -- for d.c. firefighters to rescue him in this way. he was throwing his trash away in a chute, and his cell phone went down the chute. the man leaned forward to look for it, and he tumbled down. he found his cell phone and called 911 for help. rescue crews had to pump fresh air in to free him. he was not hurt. scary stuff, though. is scary, and i have to imagine, a little bit embarrassing.
