the family research council is near the verizon center in northwest washington. the accused shooter is floyd core kin of herndon. >> reporter: well, you know, there is nothing about that building that overtly says family research center. there are the inskrird words "faith, family and freedom." earlier today an armed man, with enough ammunition to reload and reload again, tried to little into that building. all that stood between him was a security guard. that guard is recovering from a gunhot wound. the man is in custody, and a much larger disaster may have been avoided. according to 28-year-old floyd corekins walked into the lobby carrying a 9-millimeter handgun he performed legally in virginia. sources tell nbc news he told the guard he was an intern. the guard became suspicious and asked him to open his backpack. >> he opened fire on the security guard. the security guard was struck, right now is receiving treatment. he's in stable condition. the security guard and others wrestled the suspect down to the ground. >> reporter: d.c. police and the fbi have not c
