. >> up next, booktv sat down with george washington university professor marcy norton to discuss her book, "sacred gifts, profane pleasures." this is about 20 minutes. >> george washington professor marcy norton, where did snickers bar and mara broke him from? >> well, we have to go way back in time, tobacco and chocolate are both native to the americas. and were developed by indians. tobaccos in the distant past several thousand years b.c. and a cow which is the raw central ingredient to chocolate, likewise, made about 3000 b.c. and so they were central to native americans and when europeans had no knowledge of that until they arrived starting with columbus in 1492. and went from their. >> how would they use in these ancient cultures? >> so, tobacco was used in a whole multitude of ways. smoked, cigars, pipes, sort of cigarette like substances also use topically as medicines, snuffed through the nose. in the most. a whole host of applications, sword bearing depending on the region. chocolate had a more restricted domain. so what really important is to remember is that it was a bever

commissioner norton: aye. vice-president yee: aye. >> item p is the consent calendar resolution for board discussion. that is the sacrificial lamb tonight. this was our item k2. i said that he did not have to stay for this. i just wanted to use this as an example for something that drives me crazy. the resolution is something that should be under the selection process. it should explain how the selection process works. the selection process is actually why this is a retroactive resolution. the challenge that i continue to have is that there are items that come before us that are often grants that we have been given. they have not dropped into our account. they come to us after we have already started service. the challenge is, are there any of these richelieu's since -- resolutions, which are retro, we have been given the grant, it did not drop into our account. what i want to try to avoid is this idea that we are having services move forward without the money being identified or the money has not been approve

congratulations, president yee, vice president norton. as all of you know who live in the city of san francisco, because you probably saw this note, two days before christmas, just before noon, there was a horrific fire on turk and golden date gate -- golden gate that left almost 60 eem homeless -- 60 people homeless for the holiday. it could have been a lot worse for some of them but for the 2006 bond construction project happening next door, at the golden gate campus, former golden gate campus creative charts -- creative arts charter school who happened to be working that day, 10 or 11 workers who were going about their business of pounding nails and doing what construction workers do saw these two buildings literally going up in smoke almost instantly and charged next door, broke down the door, with a sledgehammer, and in fact woke up some people that actually were asleep at noon and probably would have perished. so it was a great story, we're also -- there were also four people from our building and ground staff that came out and shut
