mary beth norton is a history professor with cornell university. a lot of your work focuses on -- a lot of your teaching focuses on pre-colonial and colonial women. you've written a lot about it. what interests you in this subject? >> well, for one thing, very few people really think about women in the colonial period very much. or if they do they think of them just as -- i don't know -- houseworkers, workers around the house. they don't think of their potential public roles. one of the things i'm very interested in, in the 17th century, is women who actually take prominent public roles in the colonies because there are some, and in the 18th century i'm interested in -- i did a whole book on women in the revolution. i'm interested in the -- how women perceive their relationship to the public realm, how men see women in the public realm in the run-up to the revolution and during the revolution. >> what would be some of the early examples of women in the public realm prior to the revolution? >> prior to the revolution, one of the most interesting exa

norton: mr. speaker, almost all abortions in the district of columbia are performed between six and 10 weeks. i was denied by -- my request was denied even to testify on this bill, even though this bill affects only residents of my city. i was told that, and i did not insist, that the democrats had a witness. they had to hear from that witness. christine had an abortion at 22 weeks only after her physician told her she was carrying a fetus with half a brain and if it were born alive it would have constant seizures throughout its life. this bill would not have allowed her to have an abortion and she would have had to carry that fetus to term. she has now had a healthy baby, she still grieves for the bay be-- baby she could not have. but she would never have deserved the punishment that this bill would have inflicted on her. i ask members of this house to respect the laws and the women and the residents of the district of columbia, let us do what you insist all over the united states be done in you

congresswoman eleanor holmes norton represents the district. says this is a direct attack on role versus wade. she says the bill has been written apply to only women in d.c. because those supporting the bill don't want to draw national attention right now. she says the house leadership has chosen a for procedural vote that would minimize public scrutiny. she says the bill will be brought to the court today under what is called a suspension of the rules, which limits the debate to only 20 minutes per side and prevents all amendments. says if the bill passes it will not just affect d.c. women but women nationwide. she says this bill is the key element of a state-by-state campaign to undermine a woman's right to choose and to overturn the law of the land. once again, the bill will be brought on the house floor today for a vote. we will monitor that situation on capitol hill and bring viewers any updates from the hill as we get them. reporting live, jummy olabanji. >> new findings about the death of the american hikers in peru, including one hiker
