nortons nephew, steve rule, says since then sjsu was his uncles home. i really now as i get to know the situation better and hear the kind things that were said about him today is just i realize that this was truly his family and i think he would want everyone to remember him that way and to remember san jose state the same way. this is a community and a family and i think he was proud to be on it. peter buzanski, who once shared an office with norton, says his frien and colleague brought big changes to the university. he fought very hard to turn this university into a liberal arts university, know he had a great deal of help from president robert clark. today sjsu is a liberal arts school. norton used his modest professor salary to fund multiple endowments to help faculty and students. he gave virtually all he had back to this university and that is a very rare thing, that shows the kid of generosity he had he also did all of this by the way without telling people about it. his family asks remembrances be made to the "sjsu political science faculty end

deer miss norton and the san francisco school board members. i am writing in regards to my daughter's fourth grade teacher. it has been brought to my attention that her position is in jeopardy, as is her position with the san francisco unified school district. i am involved parent volunteering at school as often as able. being self employed i have the flexibility to be in the classroom once or twice a week so i am able to monitor the education my children have been receiving. when sitting in her class i notice how she engages students. she is energetic and [inaudible]. these qualities we should look for in all educational professionals. it is unclear to me why someone of her ability will not be reelected to teach next year. she's the kind of teacher that students will remember when they look back at their education. please reconsider this decision as i am looking forward to having my son in her class. it is teachers like her that restore faith in the public school system. most sincerely, glenda [inaudible]. >> good evening president norton and

. >> thank you president norton. this is always one of my favorite items in our board meetings where we get to talk about our national board certified teachers. it seems like every year we get to add more and more teachers to this illustrious list. if i can just describe a little bit about this board. we're honored this evening to honor or nationally board certify teachers. this is an advanced teaching credential. it is achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize teachers who meet high standards. our candidates complete ten assignments that include four portfolio entries and six constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge. those these are -- these are the best of the best. there are 28 teachers who have completed this rigorous process. thanks to our wonderful teachers who continue to go above and beyond for our wonderful students. in terms of a per ratio or per capita, we have the greatest number of nationally board certified teachers in california, and

. >> thank you, president norton. i would like to invite dr. brent stevens to the podium to make the first presentation of the rave distinguished serve award. >> thank you, superintendent carranza. it is my happy to present to you robert brecer and he has been nominated for a rave award. he is a former french teacher and taught in minnesota and moved to california to become a teacher and is one of those rare administrators who comes up through the ranks to become the leader of his own staff at alerado and served as principal for 6 years and during that time he has been instrumental in a number of important pieces of work. that includes leading trainings for staff around supporting english language learners and instrumental in bringing reading partners to the school and he has also been working with the pta to create a support network and a literacy network to support the struggling readers. most recently he has been reading by design to introduce writing strategies to all of the classes. and in my brief stint of work i have had a chance to see

thank you president norton, i would like to call the director kevin chavez who will take us through item m. >> good evening, commissioners, and superintendent, so this is regarding the title 3 improvement plan that we are required to submit to the california department of education. san francisco unified school district receives title 3 funding from the federal government to help english learners to speak, read and write in english. and to achieve success in reading and mathematics. school districts and other agencies that receive the title 3 funds are reviewed each year as required in the no child left behind to see if they meet the three measured objectives further english learners, and progress in learning english and the progress in the percentage of students who become proficient in english and language art and mathematics. >> for the 11, 12 school year they met the first two targets and did not meet the academic target in english, language arts for the fourth year in a row and math this last year. this information is shown in the chart that i have presented in my hand out to you. t
