i mean these these medications, you know ozempic, for example, comes from novo nordisk out of out ofmark, outside of copenhagen. that company and now has a larger value than the entire country of denmark. i mean, that just gives you some sense of just how quickly these medications took off. but one of the things that was really interesting to me anderson, is when you think about obesity, thinking about it as a disease of the brain the idea that for some people, when they eat the hormones don't go to a part of the brain that tells them that they are full and as a result, even when they're eating they're already thinking about their next meal. they get anxious if they think that there's not enough food around. so the idea of thinking of obesity increasingly as a brain disease, much in the way that we thought about depression, you know, several decades ago we now it's clear that it's a brain disease. we're sort of at that same stage now, i think, with obesity and it's pretty fascinating how you treat it. if you if you sort of approach it that way. >> well, thanks. so much. and i look fo

spent a lot of time in denmark for example, where the original drugs like ozempic came from, from novo nordisku know, the drugs have been in shortage almost since they started becoming popular. and part of the reason for that, manu, is that they did not anticipate these drug manufacturers just how popular these drugs would become. they thought, look, are people going to really want to inject themselves with medications like this for obesity they thought not these pens themselves. i don't know if you've ever seen one of these, manu, but these pens, that's really what goes into shortage. these are 14 different parts. each one of them is patented. they have to be assembled. so the pens are really what's driving the shortage. they're trying to fix that sort of problem now. so that was fascinating but the biggest thing i think for me as a neuroscientist, manu, is that you know, we're increasingly thinking of obesity as a as a brain disease specifically an area of the brain around here called the hypothalamus. some people when they eat, they don't feel full, they don't feel full while they're eating

and in every study done by the actual drug company, novo nordisk, all of the people on the drugs in the study are also on a handful of other drugs associated with diabetes, heart disease, chronic kidney disease, and so on. now then, if we're using our common sense and we look at how we got here, wouldn't it be smarter, wouldn't it be more advantageous for the taxpaying american to take those dollars and give each and every one of those people three organic meals a day, and a gym membership counseling, fitness training, which with that kind of money, you can actually afford. so who is this really benefiting americans or the drug companies? see. all right. so i know a little bit about your life story. and one day we're going to have a long discussion about it. but when you were young, maybe i think 12 years old or around that ag, you're about five feet tall and you weighed about 170 pounds, and you've been very open about it. i'm not disclosing something that people don't know, and that is an incredible story to me. but a lot of people like i work out every day. i don't really feel like d

so it's in europe, for example, in denmark, where novo nordisk, the makers of ozempic are. you've seen versions of these medications. so my point being, there is some long term data because of that on these medications. and it's been pretty favorable. i think what we don't know is for people who are taking it off label so to speak, so they're not taking it because of a medical necessity. we don't really have any data on on what this will be for them. long term. there's just no data that hasn't been studied. but we do know that in addition to fat mass these medications also make you lose muscle mass. and that was one of the big concerns, i think, you know, especially for older people, jessica, you know, it may predispose you to falls shorter lifespan. so really making sure you maintain resistance training when you're on these medications, that was something we heard over and over again from doctors all over the world. >> yeah. that's interesting. and how is the development of these drugs changed our and even your understanding of obesity as a disease, as you took a year to r
