ntsb that the pipeline was seemless. there were no wells in it. but now the report comes out today and it points to dozen of defects and cracks in the wells that held the pipe together. today's report did not determine the cause of the blast that killed eight people and destroyed dozens of home. a professor that read the report says it indicates that there may have been multiple bursts that led to the massive blast. the nstb found so many defects, the professor says he's surprised the problem was not discovered earlier. here is a look at some of the pieces of the pipe investigators reviewed. the pipe varied in thickness in certain spots. the report says original wells had failed to penetrate completely in some areas. a former ntsb member who saw the report says it shows evidence that the wells were of poor quality. now, those wells were made way back in 1956. that was before crews used x-rays to check the integrity of the seals. the ntsb had determined the pipeline had experienced a spike in pressure just before the blast. now, the president says

but the ntsb report really starts narrowing what needs to be done in order to worry about these other pipes that over the last eight years or so, there are about ten pipes in the system, big pipes like, this where they have spiked the pressure up to the maximum operating pressure, i think about 400 pounds per square inch, just to test them, see if they'll leak, see if they're good, all of that. if you have defective welds or have problems with welds or anything like, that then you run the risk of causing another problem. even though the pipes are probably graded for many hundreds of pounds of pressure on top of that. apparently this pipe had some sort of a problem that was not expected and was not believed was going to happen. bottom line is that they now have a pretty good idea of what happened. now they've got to get to the root cause of it, which will take more months. >> does pg&e not know what kinds of pipes it has somewhere, or was there some deception, and which would be worse? >> that's going to be a major question. the san mateo district attorney's office is interested in get

the ntsb has still not determined the cause of the blast. that could come in march in washington d.c. san jose police are investigating the deadly shooting of a young man during rush hour yesterday evening. officers found the victim just before 5:00 at story road and east capital expressway. story was shut down in both directions for several hours. the victim who has not been identified is between 18 and 20 years old. so far there's no word on any suspects or what led to that shooting. this morning a south bay family is grieving. they say their son was murdered by a police officer in ethiopia. the 20-year-old was there seeing relatives. now the family wants the u.s. government to help them receive justice. abc 7's lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> a steady flow of visitors try to console a family that's experienced so much loss. >> he was a good kid to me. >> asanni died january 9th. he loved his family, sports and ethiopia, his mother's native country. he led for africa january 1st. nine days later he was in a restaurant. >> one that got

the ntsb says the utility should aggressively and diligently search for all pipeline system records. only once those records are considered verifiable and complete. all maximum pipeline pressure should be based on the weakest section of pipe. and if records cannot be verified, pg&e should do what's called electrostatic testing, where high pressure water is put through the lines. congressman jackie speier says the recommendations show there are still many significant questions about the safety of pg&e lines. >> and the question really becomes, in this whole region, how much of the pipeline system that pg&e operates is indeed seen, and how much of that pipeline system has never, ever been inspected? >> the safe and reliable operation of our natural gas system is of the utmost importance to us. we take all of this very seriously. >> the feds also called on state regulators to make sure pg&e does a thorough job checking its records. >>> let's get another check of our weather and traffic. let's start with lawrence to tell us how that chilly weather is doing out there. >> yeah. still cold
