the ntsb is investigating the accident. one of the questions investigators will try to answer is how the two men were caught off guard with no time to escape an oncoming train. live now in walnut creek with more on the story. ally. >> the ntsb wrapped up its briefing here at the pleasant hill station about 30 minutes ago. we heard from investigator jim who said they have completed all their inspection of the mechanical equipment on the train, and he says everything was working properly from the brakes to the horn. they've also completed interviews with the three people who were in the cab of the train when it struck the workers on the track. two of those people were going through a training exercise to be certified to operate trains. the third person in the cab was behind them supervising that training. the ntsb is going to be doing a reenactment tomorrow of the accident on the tracks in order to gather some more information. one of the questions they'll be trying to answer is how these two workers on the tracks may have be

ntsb officials went to korea to interview asiana officials. they spent time in an aircraft simulator and gathered asiana training documents. they want to know whether the cockpit crew had enough instruction on how to fly the highly automated boeing 777. it may help explain why the plane fell short of the runway hitting a rock wall at sfo. the ntsb is also reviewing maintenance records and scouring the reckage once again. they are also working on a computer simulation of the crash to better understand what happened last summer. we will hear more from the ntsb in december when a two-day investigative hearing about the crash will take place here in washington. we've also discovered that the ntsb is looking at something else. emergency evacuation slides. one didn't open outside of the plane, it opened inside pinning two flight attendants to the floor. tonight on channel 2 news, my investigation of the faulty slides and my federal investigators probably weren't surprised they -- why federal investigators probably weren't surprised they didn't work.

a day after a deadly metro accident, ntsb officials are usually swarming the accident scene.s morning, we can tell you the ntsb is not sending investigators here to union station where this happened early yesterday morning. and not only is the agency not sending an investigator, they're not going to even investigate this, they say. and it's all because of the government shutdown. it was overnight construction saturday into sunday on the outbound red line tracks, approximately 400 feet from the platform. again here at union station. it all started we're told with a loud bang and then a fire. the workers who were down below welding steel rail sections together, they were able to put it out pretty quickly. then a 40-foot section of rail dislodged, striking three workers, two of them were seriously injured. a contractor from holland welding company, a 41-year-old man known as harold ingram, he has been identified this morning. he sadly was killed. now, metro investigators, they are still trying to figure out exactly what happened here, what caused that fire, and then caused that

service traffic is heavy as thousands of commuters turn to buses and ferries and the ntsb is releasing new information about the deadly accident over the weekend. >> we have team coverage tonight. first we begin with ktvu's ken pritchett. the union now says there are only two issues that still need to be settled in the negotiations. ken? >> reporter: both b.a.r.t. and the unions have expressed optimism or hopes that a deal might be done today. we are still waiting on that and we have seen no negotiations here at the headquarters where the negotiations have been taking place although b.a.r.t. expected a mediator to range such a meeting. all that said progress has been made today. late this afternoon the union representing a majority of b.a.r.t. workers said two issues remained, that is narrowed down from five before the week. the union and b.a.r.t. have been talking and both sides say work place issues separate the two sides from a deal. b.a.r.t. says it expected a mediator would have gotten both sides -- they expect both sides will get together to have meetings. the union said that b.a

i just spoke with the ntsb.y could launch a full-fledged investigation and it is parallel line with the investigation by bart police. it is very quiet with the exception of just a couple of bart police officers that secured the tracks. this train has not gone anywhere. when it struck the workers yesterday at around 2:00 p.m. it was not carrying passengers it was just a maintenance round. they hit a dip in the tracks. it was under a computer control and the maintenance workers the common practice is for one on the the real system and the other is serving as a lookout. it is not clear if the protocol was followed. both employees were veterans of the interest-rate. of the int industry -- they are veterans of the industry. >> these are experts. i cannot tell you how long did they have been working with bart i believe the both of these employees have a considerable amount with freight railroads as well. their specialty is track work. >> reporter: officials have not released their names but we do know that one is the

reporter: you know, ntsb investigators in charge jim fouts finished speaking an hour ago. he says he wants to investigate exactly what happened with that train that killed two b.a.r.t. employees. he says this is no longer being treated as a criminal investigation. this week he and his team will interview everyone on the train at the time of the accident and the operator of the train will be tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard operating procedure. >> just before 4:00 p.m. the train involved in the accident was moved from the scene and teen a secure location. ntsb investigator in charge says that mechanical inspections will be performed and they are collecting digital records and looking at safety protocols. >> a full inspection of the equipment, men can cal inspection of every operation on the train, inside and out, wheels, brakes, third rail, everything. >> officials have not said where the train was headed at the time of the accident, but did say it was being idea to transport employees for nonrevenue service, and the final report could take as long as six mon

. >>> happening right now, the ntsb has temporarily closed multiple bart stations to reenact the accident that killed two bart workers last saturday. train traffic is being derailed in the east bay because of it. anne makovec is at the walnut creek bart station where investigators are searching for answers. >> reporter: the station closures are in effect for about 3.5 hours this afternoon from now until 3:30 and eventually the ntsb is going to be on the tracks reenacting that deadly accident when one bart worker and one contractor were killed at about 2 p.m. on saturday. they were up there trying to repair a dip in the track when the train hit and killed them both. some of the things that have come out over the past 48 hours, they were working with simple approval so they are responsible for their own safety out there. one was the lookout. as far as who was driving the train, it was a bart manager, being trained to operate during the bart strike. now, everything on the train itself appeared to be in working order preliminarily at least from the ntsb. it did look like there was an attempt
