the ntsb is anticipated to offer a statement later today. but at this point the investigation is really focusing on just the unusual circumstances here. there was no weather, inclement weather. there were no curves in the track at the place that this thing went off the rails and so investigators are trying to figure out how a train on a beautifully clear day on a straight line of track could have lost eight cars off the track. we spoke to a former ntsb board member about what it is that an investigation is going to look at. here is what she had to say. >> the first thing is we talked to local authorities who were the first on scene and gather any information they have from those individuals who were there. what they'll do is ask for any not only verbal information but also any physical evidence that might have been gathered. any photographs. i know passengers have taken photographs. they'll begin to collect every bit of information that is available. they will -- the team will include not only ntsb members, employees, who are specialists in

the ntsb dispatched a go team from here in washington. we're hearing from amtrak they have an incident response team now on the ground to kick off what will be a rigorous investigation into why this empire builder train derailed near joplin, montana. you mentioned 141 passengers and 16 crew on board. amtrak now says passengers and crew were among the injured. the real trick here is the location. joplin, montana, is in liberty county, population 150. right now, we are being told that passengers were being taken to a nearby senior center but amtrak, because of the location, is no the able to provide other transportation, like another train, to get these people further down the line. this train was going between chicago and seattle, average speed about 50 miles an hour. it takes about 45 hour to take this trip. it's a pretty long journey, a scenic one through the big sky area of montana and beyond. we are just hearing from passengers who described this terrifying scene as this train derailed. >> i awoke to it derailing and i would describe t

but the ntsb is there. they're doing their research. it will be very complete, and we will find out i think soon what the potential causes for this are, and i will tell you that, you know, whatever they might be, if there's things that we have to do to enable amtrak to make those cars safer or the railroad company to make the rails safer, we're going to try to do it, and that's where we're at. let me tell you a good news story of this tragedy though. when this happened at about 4:00 in the afternoon montana time on saturday, first responders from all over the region came and helped. these are for the most part all volunteer fire departments and they came and helped en masse. 150 volunteers on the ground helping get people out of cars and making sure they were okay and getting them to schools and ultimately hospitals if they needed to go. and it really, really says something about the people of montana that when a crisis happens, they come, and they come en masse, and they get the job done. and i just say thank you to those first respond

the ntsb just generally plays a supporting role. it depends really on what the mission of the aircraft was. if it was had a normal military training operation, the air force has a bifurcated investigation process. one is a safety investigation and then a second investigation which is more confidential looks at other aspects, but this is, you know, all the attention right now should be focused on, you know, aiding victims and helping them at the hospitals and finding out what happened to the crew members on board. again, we understand that at least two, possibly as many as six residences may have been impacted involving a military flight. again, we don't know what kind of aircraft was involved here, how many people were on board, peter. all of those kind of basic questions remain unanswered. we're awaiting a briefing coming soon. again, you mentioned that the military will lead the investigation, so how forthright might it be in making it public, what kind of training exercise it was and what could have gone wrong before notifying, s

a team of ntsb officials are heading to the crash site to investigate.ina coleman is following the story from our los angeles bureau. >> arthel, there were some terrifying moments for passengers on this train. three people were killed and local authorities confirm well over 50 people were injured. seven of them are currently hospitalized. the amtrak train was heading westbound from chicago to the seattle portland area -- [inaudible]. amtrak confirmed approximately 141 passengers and 16 crewmembers were on board. eight of the train's ten cars derailed. one passenger reportedly said it felt like extreme turbulence on a plane. emergency crews from six different counties responded to this incident, in addition to nearby residents who offered to help. >> we're so fortunate to live where we do where neighbors help neighbors and to have, you know, the gentleman from the county in montana took a wrong turn, saw that we had an emergency and just stopped to help. i mean, it is amaing the turnout just the community in general helping everyone >> also amtrak says th

the ntsb is now investigating the death of a woman at a bart station in san francisco. this happened at the powell street, bart station, 3 20 monday afternoon 41 year old amy adams had just gotten on a dublin pleasanton bound train. bart says adams had a dog on a leash that was tied around her waist. adam suddenly got off the train just as the doors were closing, but the dog stayed in the car. adams was then. dragged down the platform by the moving train while she was still tethered to the dog this morning. arts general manager called the incident a tragic accident and said bart is fully cooperating with the ntsb s investigation. i'm always about continual improvement and if there are recommendations coming out of that investigation to, you know, to push bart and bay area transit to world class, i'm going to implement those, bob bauer says. currently bart's policy is that passengers can only bring official service dogs onto the system. all of their dogs need to be in a crate. power says he does not believe the dog in this case. was a service dog. that dog by the way, wa

ntsb, as you know, has announced they will be sending an investigative team. and they will look at everything. they will look at the function of the tree. was there any problem with mechanical function? with the cars? with the engines? with whatever else might be involved in the mechanical aspect of that. they will look at the track. what condition is the truck in? how recently was it repaired? investigation records that they can look at? they will look at the performance of the crew. was there a crew sleep issue? the weather does it seem to be a factor, but you never know. and it's interesting to me that a significant portion of the train, including the two engines, cleared the seam section of the track. so, it's one of those things, they'll figure out what happened. but it doesn't fit a pattern of a normal investigation, where you can usually pinpoint something right away. there doesn't seem to be any signals here that they would've blown through, or running to anything else. but they will find out. and of course, it's just a real loss for those families who
