what is this ntsb team going to be looking for when they get to the scene?ntsb team is going to be aided, first and foremost, by the black box on the train. it has forward looking equipment. they will be pulling the camera. it will have the train speed, when the wrisl whistles and hor was sounded, there are regulations how far before the crossing the audible signals have to be sounded. speed of the train. when the opening near and train control personnel applied the brakes. that gives them an idea when they saw the obstruction on the track. so because of that black box they will have an awful lot of information to start with. and of course they will also gather information about the track, the track conditions, which railroad owns that particular section of track, and information about the signage. apparently, it was the standard cross hatch, cross sort of sign, not any lights or gates or arms. but they will have all that in advance and then, of course, once they get there, the hard work starts of looking at the train, the controls, measuring everything and

. >> the ntsb will not only be looking at video from passengers, but also onboard video on this trainamtrak trains and revenue service have to have cameras onboard front facing to look at the tracks. investigators will be looking at the shape of the tracks, how fast the train was going if there's an effort to stop. one bright scout there was a boy scout troop onboard from appleton, wisconsin, they were in this derailment. they were uninjured miraculously, and they stayed on the scene and to help their fellow passengers while other help arrived. i want you to listen to one of the leaders from the boys from appleton. >> i'm proud of them, one scout wrapped his hand. took his shirt off, wrapped his hand and break windows to get people out. another scout went and comforted the driver of the truck that was hit. and tried to stabilize him. they were tandem working on that gentleman when he expired. that scout was pretty shook up. >> reporter: investigators here on the scene, we have seen heavy equipment arriving here on the scene. the big priority is reopening these tracks. this is a critic

>> reporter: you know, poppy, investigators from the ntsb are just now arriving on the scene.made a pretty key finding. you know they will look at a speed of the train, whether or not there was an effort to brake, what the shape of the tracks were. this train crossing was an uncontrolled crossing. that is critical. they're especially dangerous. there are thousands across rural america. there are no blinking lights, no retractable barriers, this dump truck was in the middle of that crossing when it was hit at incredible force, pulverized that truck. one person on board that truck was killed. practically riped the truck off its chassis. eight of the ten cars of this amtrak train tipped on to their side and derailed. there was incredible video from passengers on board as they were still in shock. they pretty quickly realized that this train hit a truck. 275 passengers on board. maybe one bright spot here, because this is a rural area, it takes a while to get help, there were 16 boy scouts on board from a few troops in appleton, wisconsin, and they were miraculously uninjured and
