let's bring in ntv's dennis okari from nairobi. what can you tell us about what's unfolded and the status of the students and attackers this hour? >> reporter: it's around 5:30 in the morning. after the monitor in the campus, the military surrounded the compound. the area has been cordoned off. to bring you up to speed, several more casualties have been brought up including one military officers. i've spoken to red cross officials who were telling me that most of the casualties have been evacuated. they are still trying to disclose where they could be hiding. the number could be between six and ten. we're not sure yet. we've been trying to monitor al shabaab. we understand the counselor is holed up inside the campus. >> we're looking at the map of where garissa university is located. it looks relatively well developed. we heard the last reporter there say that security on campus is reported to have been weak. only two security officials supposed to be manning a gate. they weren't there. can you fill us in on what the security situa

a reporter with our affiliate, ntv, says there are between six and ten gunmen engaged in a fire-fight with police and military forces there. >> this is ongoing. and so far, we know the red cross tweeted that at least 30 people have been taken to the hospital with injuries. four are serious. they say the majority of the casualties suffered gunshot wounds. >> the u.s. embassy in nairobi has responded to the attack with a tweet. you see it on the screens here. >> i'll read it to you -- "we are sadden and angered by the terrorist attack at garissa university. our deepest condolences to family and friends of the victims. #cowardsneverwin." all right. we want to turn to cnn's reporter live from nairobi, kenya, where she is monitoring this situation. so what all do we know at this point? >> reporter: as you rightly put it, so far we know that at least eight people have been confirmed dead. and according to reports from the ground, two of them are the guards who were at the main gate when the gunmen in and started by shooting one of the guards at the main gate and another soon after. we know

joining us on the phone, is journalist dennis okari, with cnn affiliate ntv.that's under attack attack. can you hear me? >> yes. >> tell us where you are at this moment? >> okay, i'm actually outside the compound of garissa university in northern kenya. just here almost an hour ago. and this is a picture from the airport at the garissa air strip. we found chartered flights. most of them taking the injured to the capital city nairobi. i managed to speak to one of the survivors. and they [ indiscernible ] >> they're now using the air strip of the rescue center there, coming out of the university would be attended to before going to nairobi. i also managed to see one corner of the air strip close to 200 students who are sitting down surrounded by military officials. i don't understand part freeing all the students who came out who saw and yet to understand what exactly happened at 4:30 in the morning. but next to the university i can hear gunshots and hear explosions in the background. this has been going on for several hours. >> dennis let me stop you there -- >

i'm joined now on the phone, dennis ocari, a reporter with ntv is on the scene. what's the very latest? what's the situation there? >> reporter: well, we are actually at the main entrance of the campus and from where i'm standing, it's quite busy. it's not normally like this but today it's unusually busy with ambulances and rescue teams going in and leaving with those who have been injured and the dead. the university bus that actually parked here two times full of students, the ones who managed to be rescued, all taken to the gariffa air strip a small air strip in the couldn't center where they're going to go through screening to get any formal come toation and perhaps also semblance of exactly what happened, the gunmen all dressed in black and all wearing masks. so the authorities are trying to get impressions of how they looked like so that they can put faces to the names, and so far are saying there's one who is the voluntary head believed to have led the attack and also you've seen a lot of military movement. this is the place where they are trying to coordi

joining me by phone is dennis okari, ntv reporter and a member of the kenyan red cross.is in nairobi. dennis let me start with you. what is the latest from the ground that you're hearing? >> reporter: actually in garissa town and we've been here for several hours, and what we've been able to see. there's been a lot of activity going on. the military has took over the operation. no one goes in and no one leaves out without the military's knowledge. >> at the moment i can confirm one military officer has been killed and one administration officer has has been killed. bodies are being flown to nairobi by a private plane. two more bodies are going to be buried here. several other people have been injured. we can't confirm the number. they have yet to come up with a specific figure of how many have been injured but counting the number of militants in the past year, the number could actually go high and the number killed could actually rise. the military was trying to avoid a situation where they don't want a repeat when the siege went on for three day. they are trying to brin
