fox weather's will nunley is live in puerto rico this morning in ponce.r: good morning, an ongoing emergency here, as a matter of fact just seconds before our conversation we had yet another emergency alert sounding because of a flood emergency here on the island. we had that throughout the night. the rain has not ceased since it started about 9:00 yesterday morning in ponce, puerto rico. we had tremendous wind that continued well into the night. that left a tremendous amount a of destruction in its path. we're talking the entire electric grid offline this morning and there is no estimate on when that will be returning by the way. we have ongoing flash flood emergencies across the island. we have new readings this morning from the national weather service in san juan that have rain totals between 18 to 20 inches. it's going to continue to build because those totals are not done gathering yet. we have rescue operations underway, a lot to wrap our heads around here. the fox weather team is on the ground and we'll continue to bring you the latest from the de

live in fort myers, florida, will nunley is with us. before we get to will, let's talk a little bit more about the meteorology with marisa torres. what do you see tonight? >> reporter: hey there, kennedy. we're going to give you a bird's eye view of fort myers, but this is our satellite look at hurricane each. the latest advisory hasn't changed a ton, but we are still seeing a very powerful storm and notice it might actually be undergoing that eye wall replacement which is very normal throughout the life cycle of a strong hurricane. what that will do though is really start to broaden this out. so this is massive in size. 120 mile-per-hour sustained winds. this is a category three hurricane, expected to become a category four, and it's moving north. and you mentioned there'll still some uncertainty with the cone, that's for sure. however, that northeastward steer, to the drifting further to the south. while there is some uncertainty, we can tell you with great certainty that areas along the gulf coast are going to be feeling life threate

we begin with will nunley in fort myers on what happens now in that neck of the woods. will? >> those are incredible numbers that you gave there in the overview. i'm afraid we'll see the numbers increase over time. we constantly hear the sound of ambulances coming throughout fort myers. we've seen some convoys of 20, 30 ambulances in a row at a time trying to evacuate special care facilities and nursing homes. we're in a mobile home park here between fort myers and fort myers beach. i spoke to a man that said he pulled his pickup truck here next to this building trying to ride out the storm. he said his pickup truck was lifting up under the weight of the storm. he didn't know if he would make it out. he's safe. try to imagine be in the force of the hurricane and the back of your truck lifting up. throughout this community, lots of these homes if not just halfway taken down, completely taken down. a lot i want to show you in the distance. there's two structures that have vanished. this is an area that saw storm surge, so parts of that debris not only was blown apart by the for

cape coral is where we find fox weathers will nunley who brings us details from one of the hardest hitf the storm. >> when we last spoke people were trying to get to the chaos of the moment and tonight they had come face-to-face with a truly remarkable damage left behind from this powerful storm. you can see an example behind me i'm happy to report the man who owned this home did make it out okay i was able to speak with him this afternoon. our crews have been out surveying some of the damage. on the tip of cape coral right next to ft. myers, this is one of the hardest hit areas of the entire region, we have heard the buzz of coast guard helicopters throughout the day performing rescues here. you have to get some of these areas by boat because the bridges and roads have been washed away. as a matter of fact i'm standing next to a canal that was created under the storm surge and the force here making waterways where before there were none, washing away people's homes completely. they had the diligent and very dangerous work of trying to go into what's left of some of these structures to

neil: i want to go to will nunley. how does it look? >> we continue to watch the power moment by moment, getting wind gusts of 40 miles an hour. i am between downtown fort myers and interstate 75, to make sure we are far from this inundation of storm surge that is expected to come through, we are 20 minutes from where this amazing category 5 storm is making landfall. for the next hour or two, we will see incredible force on its way. we are hearing of infrastructure failing in terms of power poles and tremendous outages and waves crashing here, the height of winches on those exterior barrier islands, that is the type of force we've been concerned about happening here. we expect problems with traffic lights, things like that will come down even though this is well constructed, concrete posts supporting this. infrastructure around here, only so much this can take out of the way of a storm like this. we are very infrequently seeing anyone on the roads. we see a passing car here every now and then but this is rare most people staying inside.

fox weather correspondent will nunley tracking it from clearwater. >> good evening from clearwater beacha, and what would normally be a very busy night but instead people have been using this day to board up their homes and businesses and heed evacuation orders. this is one of several areas the received evacuation orders late monday. 6:00 in the evening is when residents were told to pack up and get out of town. on the silent authorities are going to start restricting access tuesday morning and that's going to happen when a lot of these coastal areas, especially island areas that are depending on bridges to cross back and forth. we have no idea what the infrastructures going to look like after a storm like this but this is the site emergency authorities want to see people heeding these evacuation orders and not being cavalier. we are talking about a situation where we have seven to 10 feet of storm surge in these areas, tremendous amount of water to deal with. life threatening situation for anyone caught up in it. meanwhile the airports are going to start making changes tomorrow, more ev

let's go to will nunley with a look at how that looks right there.t. >> yeah, first things first, we need a break from the rain. the rain started here in puerto rico about 9:00 a.m. yesterday. it has not let up since. we've had some incredibly powerful waves of rain even though the center of circulation of fiona is passed up. we've seen unbelievable rescue operations. right now they're ongoing, but many are hampered with the fact that the rain won't go away. they're trying to reach people in the remote parts of the island. we understand from the governor more than 1,000 people have been rescued from their homes. coming from not only the mountainous regions experiencing the mudslides but plenty of homes and neighborhoods that have been completely flooded out once again here along the coast. more than 128 shelters have opened up across puerto rico. let's talk about the failing electric grid. about 100,000 customers are said to be back online. they're trying to prioritize things like hospitals and medical centers. they're not putting the final timeline

let's go over to will nunley, fox weather correspondent live from cape coral. >> good evening. you know, tonight has been all about coming face-to-face really with the reality of what the storm has left behind. by all accounts, everything we're seeing, this storm lived up to really our worst fears in this situation. i'll start by showing you just what i have behind me. this is what rescue crews are coming face-to-face with today. coming up to homes like this, trying to determine, was anybody inside. trying to get people accounted for. they're having to go street by street essentially all through cape coral where we are. this is happening on several of these islands as well. this is the farthest we can go on cape coral, because if you tried to get to pine island, the bridges have been compromised, and in some cases washed out. even the roads here in cape coral, in some cases, have been washed out. we have some video of where we are here. we've seen so many buildings washed away completely. others collapsed. we've heard the buzz of helicopters throughout the day, trying to get in

will nunley, you're in fort myers. what does it look like there? >> i want to build upon the points that rick was making. first of all, dealing with the rescues, we got alerts on our phones, saying wear not getting out, doing rescues. we don't know when that will happen. conditions will be at a point for the next few hours they still can't get out. that's terrifying news for people to receive on top of everything they're going through right now. so much of the state of florida -- its entirety -- is wrapped up in this emergency. you don't have to be experiencing what we are here in fort myers in terms of the storm surge and wind to be affected by this emergency, because you're talking about thousands of people on the move, that have been trying to get to higher ground. you're talking about all the alignment, the roads that are congested, these things compounding, creating this emergency for the entire state of florida. meanwhile we still have hours more of this chaos left. i'm essentially in a suburb of fort myers right now. it's about 10 minutes th

will nunley has a look at the damage and the rescue operation is underway in pots, puerto rico the rain has mostly stopped here, but the flooding continues as puerto rico begins assessing the damage. island taking a direct hit from hurricane fiona on sunday and monday. at least two people are dead and power was knocked out to the entire island up to 30 inches of rain falling in just two days, sarria in many areas that had never seen flooding, there has been an unprecedented accumulation of water damage to infrastructure, urban areas and residences has been catastrophic. high water rescues are still underway here. the national guard has pulled almost 1000 people from floodwaters, mostly in the eastern and southern puerto rico , where the evacuation orders remain, in effect, some 1300 people and hundreds of pets now sleeping in shelters after their homes were flooded or ripped apart by the high wind. it was too much. i didn't expect this. a lot of people lost everything very, very rough. officials here are slowly starting to shift into recovery mode with power restored to about 260,000 cu

we go to fox weather's will nunley is with you. will, fort myers got hammered today. i have friends down there, they've been sending me videos all day and it's been really bad. >> and i wish we could say that it's finally getting out of the way, but it's not. you can tell just by the wind that's hitting me right now, i'm in a section of fort myers, interstate 75 is just about two minutes away from me this direction, downtown's about ten minutes or so this direction. so we're not necessarily on the water front which has been hit much harder even than where we are right now. but we have pieces of the building that we're taking shelter in falling off around us. this is concrete tile or terracota tile, the roofing material that just crashes down. parts of this goes through windows. gas stations, unfortunately we can't show them to you very well because the power's out all around us. we have a couple of street lights that have managed to stay on. but, you know, the roofs of these buildings are coming apart. we hear the tin slap the street here behind us and just take off a
