nuremberg was a righteous trial. and the work on all the trials were too, there were minor war criminals, they were people who shot allied prisoners of war. so there is a guy charged with shooting hostages. shooting hostages is not illegal. i found a memo from ike saying if the germans surrender and then they keep fighting, you can do these things, and the last thing on the list was take hostages from the leading citizens and shoot them. but it said the commander in chief frowns on the use of such tactics, and they will not be done without his personal permission. the reason they convicted these germans is because they were shooting 100 civilians for every german soldier who was killed. some of this stuff -- read goldhagen's book about ordinary germans. it curdles your blood. colonel from a german who is told to shoot 100 polish hostages for every german soldier killed and he refuses to obey. he says i am a german officer, and i am a catholic, and i refuse to obey this order. it is both against my honor as a soldier
