nuzzo: we are there.as not already been sounded, let's sound it now because clearly there is a deep struggle and they need help. the united states will not be back to normal, fully safe until we help countries with these very concerning surges. lisa: based on the surges we've seen, how much has the end of the pandemic been pushed out? dr. nuzzo: it is really hard to say. parts of the globe have not gone through this and you don't want any country to go through this, where you see a massive surge of cases. any country that has not had a surge and is not actively vaccinating remains at risk. earlier, there were countries that may be breathed a sigh of relief and assumed they escaped the worst of the pandemic, but we are seeing clearly that is not the case, that many parts of the world remain deeply at risk. i worry about these headlines continuing for a year or more. international partners get together and share some of the vaccines, we need to make more vaccines, there is clearly a shortage of medical supp

nuzzo: i am not worried about that as a vaccinated person.re in a crowded place, particularly with poor ventilation i would wear one because we are close to this thing being over, why take the risk? a mask will be protective and easy to wear, but it does actually reduce the pressures for sure. lisa: at one point will be -- will we be actually able to take off masks given the pace of vaccinations and india? dr. nuzzo: that is a fair question and i would love there to be some target set. i think it is encouraging for some people to get vaccinated to say this makes it easier, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. some people propose that once we get down to seasonal flu levels that that changes everything. we do not maintain restrictions and make people wear masks in the context of seasonal flu, so perhaps that will make it feel much easier to do that, but we have not and i wish we would. jonathon: this is a double-edged sword when it comes to what vaccinated people can and cannot do. there is an effort to make sure that compliance fro

for nuzzo yesterday was on the show -- dr.on the show yesterday and is a question about how much the vaccination rate in the high pickup in the united states is slowing the spread here. how effective has it been given the fact that we have a high number of infections diagnosed every day? andrew: i think you are starting to see the hints of how the vaccination campaign is rolling out to the general population. -- out to the general population is working. as i look at the maps of cases, there are hotspots, cases where things are getting under control. these are the hints of the vaccination company -- campaign working. we are nowhere close to being at the level of vaccination that really make an impact on the case numbers. that is why we need to focus on maintaining the ability to get vaccines into people's arms while also keeping some of the public health interventions in place, at least for short-term, to get case numbers down. lisa: there was space that when we started this year that we had the vaccines that could stop the spr
