[applause] so this is what's going on. and people are getting at. when i see kids like yourselves coming out, i promise you guys, we are not alone. what do you think is the biggest cultural phenomenon, probably of the last 50 years? new one -- how about a "let's go, brandon?" [cheering] [audience chanting "let's go brandon."] you know there's another way to say that, but i will not. [laughter] i will not condone that kind of behavior from you fine young individuals. ok? but think about it. it's probably the biggest new sporting tradition of the last half-century. i can't name another one. it's carri

colleges, including nyu, princeton, and cornell, moving the last few days of semester online. sports leagues postponing games as more players and staff test positive for covid. and broadway shows forced to cannes l performances three months after reopening. france announced it is banning all nonessential travel from the uk as britain is seeing a new daily record for infections. let's begin with cnn's elizabeth cohen on the growing concern we're hearing from top health officialings right now. something has shifted. what are these officials saying this morning? >> reporter: i think what's shifted here is that they're seeing just how fast this is growing. i want you to take a look at some cdc data, kate. what this shows is that the omicron was only 0.4% of all of the circulating virus for the week ending december 4th, but by the week ending december 11th, it was up to 2.9%. of course both numbers are tiny and delta is by far the predominant variant, but that's going up more than seven times in one week. so, they are concerned about it growing you might say why are they concerned?

so here at nyu, they have basically canceled large in-person events and moved finals to online. beyond that, nyu is requiring that students and staff when they come back following the holiday break next year for the spring semester, they all have to have their booster shots. students as well as staff. now, this is something that not only nyu is doing but other colleges here in new york, fordham university is doing it, ithaca college, not ithaca, cornell university and ithaca is doing it as well as princeton in new jersey and cornell earlier this week essentially shut down its campus because of what they called an alert level red this week, an outbreak of something like 469 active student cases of positive covid tests that came through and it sent an alarm through the campus and they essentially shut it down. booster shots required there like here. we talked to some students about the fact they have to have their booster shot before coming back to campus. here's what one student told us. >> for the most part, it's been in person, so we just got the announcement yesterday that eve

at nyu they don't need to explain. they just resort to threat. a third year student at nyu law school just sent this e-mail to the entire student body. quote, i can guarantee that you have classmates who have underlying health conditions, if you choose not to wear a mask indoors you're saying you don't care about any of their lives. end quote. what? no. that's not what you're saying. you're saying you believe in science and you're not insane. then she issued this instruction. this is a student. quote, report those who don't wear their masks properly, they should be held accountable, reporting improper mask wearing is an act of care. it's an act of fascism, wake up. but the administrators at nyu agree and have set up a covid reporting system to encourage classmates to snitch on each other. whatever happened to no snitching? let's get back to that. they want students to get the janitor fired if his mask slips below his nose. by the way, this is really class war, only the salvadoran bus boys are going to be in masks. that's what this really is. but

nyu announcing this week that vaccine booster will be required by january 18th.lifornia reimplemented its indoor mask mandate impacting businesses across the state. one of those frustrated business owners, the co-owner of film of fit joins me know. good morning, the full changed this week and now people going into your gym, whether vaccinated or not, when you heard this was going to be the new what went through your head? >> good morning. what went through my head, i'm just in shock. i don't know what else to do. this is ridiculous, the mask mandate, we all know they don't help, there's no evidence that proves that it slows the spread and it is sending the wrong message that gyms are unsafe. what went through my head. i'm in shock. we are down 30, 40%, we are two years and without any help, any support. we are in business to keep the public healthy yet are being mostly impacted by this. >> sounds like you are still struggling financially because of the pandemic and all the rules. >> of course. first off, the message that gyms are unsafe, which is flat-out wrong s

as you mentioned, the nyu is not alone. there is princeton and cornell. the silver lining is many of the campus counts on an extremely high vaccination rate among students. i checked princeton a little while ago, between 98 and 99%. that goes or explains why many of these breakthrough cases have not been severe. but, look, you are seeing multiple steps being taken throughout the northeast, here in new york over the last several days, even been some separate sporadic cancellations of popular broadway shows including hamilton, harry potter and the cursed child, tina and the list goes on here. these were sporadic and temporary cancellations because of breakthrough cases and because of that, of course, authorities are certainly making sure that people remain safe. at the end of the day, what we're seeing here throughout the northeast is you're seeing these tactics deployed that we have seen before in an effort to curb the spread of this virus as this winter surge continues to threaten. and many officials maintain that surge is already here. >> i don't think t

paolo, you are also there on nyu's campus right now. we talked about colleges there.y are not requiring but are strongly urging faculty to change final calls to remote or online formats, plus, a new booster requirement? >> yeah. it's a considerate acceleration in the number of cases that they have noticed here on the nyu campus, and really there are multiple schools also that are going in that direction where they are recommending that faculty simply go back to remote for their final exams. i've spoken to a lot of students this morning and this afternoon, ana, and they are largely -- they agree with the step to ensure the safety of these students. especially before they head home for the holidays so that's kind of what we're hearing here but statement one of the student you're about to hear from is more concerned about the spring and wants to make sure that these kinds of steps or at least that nyu continues to take steps to ensure the safety of faculty and staff after the holiday season. >> i feel likeful cases are high a little bit, yes, because i'm going to be a t.

i learned about ragtime while i was there and then i went to nyu because i wanted to live at new yorkcity for a while and read more books and so i got a degree usin american studies and i goto read the great gatsby. the only reason that i amend is because i was working at a coffee center at nyu to make ends meet and there was one person that was a linguist. that's the only reason i knew what linguistics was and i guess i thought maybe i can do that. i got a phd because it was the best while i was getting the degree. despite rodney king and this, that and the other thing. and i didn't understand why. that is what slowly led oj, it's clear and yet for many years all educational stripes were pretending not towe see it. i had no idea. low and behold losing the racism is a minor and then low and behold i never stopped being asked to write editorials. then it became a half an hour. people are not going to leave me alone so then i settled into it but it was all i want to be a professor. i like languages. i've seen 850. but i wouldn't have it any other way. it's a great book. i highly recomme

attending university in rwanda and then was in the refugee camp and then the story of how he came to attend nyu in new york. welcome. your book start to run your grandmother and that is extraordinary for those surviving and the harsh environment. can you tell us that story about that harsh way of life? >> . >> and when she grew up and then to come to mind and one of the harshest environments like this scorpion's and snakes and lions and hyenas. my grandfather is also a worrier.th so i remember because the job that was given originally. and then if you are sitting there but for me to say that as a gift of labor. and with every activist in the shadow.do >> i want to follow up on that. is there anotherai remaining no bad on —- nomad? >> i have been trying to change. on a place like the deserts but im the last of my family so i described in my book that it is given as a gift of labor. and then as an indication that was just my mother and then to get to that world. and then to say that unlucky thing but then i felt it was preparing me for life more than anything. >> it's a wonderful part of the book
