it was the o'connor's dining room, of course. in this room we have four of her first editions starting off with the first novel, wise blood in 1952. above it, we have 59 edition of wise blood in french. she was being translated early on. last year, 2010, we received visitors from 20 foreign countries that know about mary flannery and her work and wanted to come here and visit the house. now, this bookcase belonged to the o'connors, and in it we're very fortunate to have two of mary's childhood books. we don't have them open anymore. she wrote in the books in pencil. we don't want that to today away, so we made photocopies of crucial pages in the book. she critiqued the childhood books. she wrote what she thought, and if it was not a good book, she was bold enough to go ahead and sign off on that. the other children's books we have here in the house were generously given to us by her cousin, and we have a photograph of mary flannery with them when mary was 10 in 1935. they were raised in the boston area and came to this area in th

it was great fun and my friends were jimmy flynn, paddy o'connor. my siblings married the shenny's and i almost married a catherine finerin but it didn't work out. i have a nephew, sean patrick mcflynn. i always question myself because my writing about the irish is really my writing about myself coming to the united states and coming into contact with the united states so consequently my puerto rican friends, and some of my irish friends, although they were more circumspect, what are you doing writing about the irish? i'm writing about the united states. the irish are more interesting. they had to put up with colonialism, just as puerto rico is a colony of the united states. i also respect the fact that they have a facility with language, which i also enjoy. consequently, i wondered why this attraction to the irish. in 2004, the university of puerto rico asked me to come there and lecture and read. i immediately called my favorite cousin, and she said, what are you doing here? i told her and i said, please come to the reading, i have a book for you.

justice o'connor on my left and justice stevens on my right, both of whom have since retired, but i would say my most memorable moment was my first time in the conference. the work of the court is, in some respects, very public. the arguments or in public, open to anyone. our decisions are there for everyone to see, but the deliberations are private. even people who have been around the court do not have the sense of what goes on. i did not. i was going in to participate for the first time and was expected to get the discussion rolling. i was extraordinarily impressed by what went on. again, i did not know quite what to expect. the level of discussion, the level of analysis -- my colleagues, of course, were prepared to present their views. the interaction between the justices was at an extraordinarily high level with a -- with inappropriate degree of collegiality, but also reflecting the fact that these folks came from different views and more interested in exploiting those views. in our conference room we had at one side of the table u.s. reports. people get up and pulled the books down
