justice o'connor: i don't look back. that is one thing i have learned in life, and that is to do the very best you can every day with whatever problems you have and are required to decide, make a decision, and then don't look back. i don't look back. i'm sure i've made plenty of mistakes, but i don't need to look after them. [laughter] i've been there, done that. >> based on the state of the current job market, what advice would you give someone considering law school? justice o'connor: i'm going to tell them that they will not perhaps immediately have the kind of job they would like cousin it seems to me there are more lawyers available for higher than there are jobs available for lawyers, and it is tougher to get a job now as a lawyer than it used to be. it may be a more challenging choice of a place to work. i'm sure it will even out over time, but if i were asked that by someone in law school today, i would tell them not to rush to get out because they might have a hard time getting a job. >> in cases that depend on

justice o'connor was shocked at the negative reaction to bush v gore.what might have been a turn to the left after bush v gore is decided on a lot of critical issues like affirmative action and gay rights. the middle of the court was affected, even if the rest of the court was in. joan: i think that is exactly right. in the o'connor book, i tracker opinions on affirmative action and redistricting. after that decision, she found the majority-minority district from north carolina to be legal. she really thought those districts created to boost minority involvement in elections, she tilted more to the left. i think it was, first of all, she always was an incrementalist , but that backlash was strong. thank you. one last question. >> this is a question for -- you chose the subject to buy accounts is charming, magnetic, attractive on some personal level. i look forward to reading about it in the book. i'm curious about your politics and how your experience writing this book changed them, if at all. joan: i chose the right field for myself. as a journalist, i

that was sandra day o'connor. once is not enough. this is the way it was. when i was in law school, there was only one woman on the federal court of appeals. she was the first woman ever appointed to the federal court of appeals. florence allen. 1934, i think. she retired in 1959. that was the year i graduated from law school. 1968 in my early days on the dc circuit, i had the great good fortune, to meet and talk to the first woman ever appointed to a federal district judge ship. she was appointed in 19 --- 1938 she was in her 90s. it was such a great experience for me. spoke to this woman, she described what it was like in the really bad old days. one of the stories was, she would go to the white house when there was a demonstration, she would hold up a sign, votes for women. she would not say a word. she did not want to risk having a record if she was hassled by the police as she did not say a word. that might impede her admission to the bar. she told me she hired only women at first. her colleagues did not hire any women. she thought women would make the
