was justice o'connor, because she was the best possible decision maker you could hope for. the person who brought the most common sense, the most judgment, the most wisdom to the role of making decisions. i do not know where it came from, whether it was because she was not only a lawyer but she was in politics for some part of her life or just part of her dna , but she had this innate feel for the country, for its history and traditions and the people who made it up and all of their commonalities and divisions, and that led her to be able to have this pitch perfect sense of when the supreme court should intervene and how the supreme court should intervene, and over and over again on these difficult questions she found the right place to be for the court, a place where there was a balance, moderation, some sense of compromise, and i don't -- it would not be right to say that everybody agreed with every decision that she made. that is not the case, but because of her decision-making and that time i think people generally had a deep reservoir of respect for the court, and what
