kelly o'donnell is in west palm beach for us. what can you tell us about the fallout on this decision? >> reporter: alex, the president will have to measure what he wants to do in terms of testing some of the leaders around the world who have become important partners with him during his time in office and gauging their reactions, whether it's canada or the european union or asia. we're already hearing about retaliation on products like blue jeans or kentucky bourbon or harley-davidsons, american products that would be sold overseas, also being hit by a potential tariff if those countries or the european union want to take some kind of a pushback, if the president goes forward with his surprisingly abrupt announcement that he would in fact sign into effect tariffs on aluminum and steel that are imported into the u.s. and while he is doing that, he says, to help americans deal, manufacturers and aluminum manufacturers, there is so much in the supply chain and so much in the broader economy that can be unintended consequences from

kelly o'donnell has more. >> reporter: fired but far from gone. sources close to ousted fbi official andrew mccabe told nbc news he took careful notes about his interactions with president trump and conversations he had with former fbi director james comey, notes mccabe turned over to the special counsel months ago. president trump tweeted his frustrations late saturday. the mueller probe should never have been started. trump's personal lawyer, john dowd, told nbc news the justice department official overseeing the probe should end it on the merits in light of recent revelations. referring to the fbi recommendation that mccabe be fired for a lack of candor and unauthorized releases to news media. mccabe denies any wrongdoing. the president lashed out at mccabe by name and the former director he fired. comey knew it all and much more. in a rare direct response comey tweeted, mr. president, suggesting his upcoming book will let the american people judge for themselves who is honorable and who is not. turning to new scrutiny of a new data company tha

kelly o'donnell has more for us. what all can you tell us? >> reporter: this is a surprising turn because typically, something of this high profile nature would be smoothed over and you would expect if there's a new addition to the president's team that would stick. well, it hasn't. the president has made clear that he is not going to be able to hire jo dee jen va who had been a u.s. attorney in the district of columbia and a prominently featured lawyer off and on television over many years, well-known in washington. and his wife, also as attorney victoria toensing. the president foreshadowed this on twitter earlier in the day. we received a specific confirmation from jay sekulow who is an attorney for the president representing him in the russian investigation. he said conflicts prevent them from joining the president's special counsel legal team. those do not prevent them from assisting the president in other legal matters. the president looks forward to working with them. conflicts, what is that referring to? it is typical when lawyers joi

nbc's kelly o'donnell is at the white house and julia aimsly who reports on justice and national security with us as well. julia, i want to start with you and this new reporting about jared kushner. mao do how does this potentially fit into mueller's probe? >> it's not completely clear it does. we know mueller is looking at overseas contacts jared kushner had and whether or not he was able to separate himself when he got into the white house. what's clear, though, is they're always looking at pay to play. with these domestic investors, there could be a way that he was somehow influenced, the policy of the white house was influenced because of these investors. in this case, this could be an ethics violation. it could also be at its most high level, if you want to take it to a criminal level, it could be a bribery violation. we know that there are elements of an ethics rule that will separate the way people do business in the white house and their personal financial gains. when those things overlap, there are rules that are broken. whether or not robert mueller is including this in his inve

let me bring in nbc news white house correspondent kelly o'donnell and legal analyst lisa green. so he's been m.i.a. for the past few days. we know where he is. we're just not hearing from him. why? >> no official reason given on his schedule he is in a few minutes supposed to be doing a credentialing ceremony for ambassadors in the oval office, but the president has not had the kind of public events that are typical for his schedule. and if there were such events there would be an opportunity for the press who covers him close up to perhaps ask about this situation. so maybe there's a connection there. but we don't know for certain. we know that the white house has tried to distance itself from all the matters that surround stormy daniels because they describe it as not official government business even though the president is related to this even if his lawyers are not saying he's a direct party. you get a sense of that by how sara sanders responded when asked about the issue of the president so frequent punching back when he hassed adversaries all kinds who are challenging him

. >>> let's go to kelly o'donnell. good saturday morning to you. any reaction from the white house to that "wall street journal" specifically to that report, but talking with official os since this surprise announcement and what we learned he was in the oval office and the briefing from the south korean national security adviser and members of that delegation was happening. it's fair to say it was a surprise to everyone that the president would be willing to have this meeting with kim jong-un. it was the national security adviser from south korea, of course, sitting with the president who had also spoken with kim in north korea. and, so, that is a close, direct connection bringing these two world leaders. improbable as it is, together. there are questions about how this will all unfold. one of the issues that we've learned about is that the south koreans and the u.s. decided they wanted a short time window to try to keep the pressure on north korea to comply with the things they said it they would do. we have a window of a couple of months. no date
