governor o'malley thanks for joining us.l us the latest in maryland and how your state is preparing for this oncoming hurricane? >> well, chris, as you mentioned, we are preparing for this category 2 to give us a real blow to the side there. in ocean city. and really, across our state as it passes by. it's a category 2. it's a killer storm. it is a very, very dangerous storm. and with the chesapeake bay, there is a tremendous amount of likelihood between the flooding, and the tidal surge, that a lot of the lower lying coastal areas, especially in the lower bay, will be inundated. so, this is a big event. we have never in modern times evacuated in a mandatory way ocean city. that evacuation is under way. several of the hundreds of the seasonal workers, sort of the kids here on student visas, have been evacuated for the last 24 hours. we hope by 5:00 p.m. tonight to have everybody out of ocean city, and it is a mandatory evacuation. >> governor, two things on that, one are you getting ju r want t st, don't think it's all that

let's bring in the fwofr of maryland, martin o'malley. joining us on phone. governor, what's the latest information you're getting about your state maryland and hurricane irene. >> wolf, do me a favor. tell chris to get out of the water. right now the initial bands are starting to lash us as you saw from chris's report. we've done a lot of preparation. we have national guard that are forwarded around the state, especially on the lower shore. now the tidal surges are always tricky in the chesapeake bay. we don't believe that those surges will being a greater than what is being forecast and that's kind of confirmed by our bay pilots as well. but, we have probably about 5,000 citizens who are in shelters around the state right now. we have approximately 40,000 customers without power all across our state. the saturation of the ground is such that, you know, these trees and as the wind picks up and as the rain picks up will no doubt take down more power lines. that's going to be a big, big challenge for us as we recover. but, actually in terms of the storm hittin

governor martin o'malley says people need to be prepared to be on their own for 72 hours if there areassive power outages. jeanne, this is a tourism hot spot that a lot of people from the washington area always go to. it seems like the last time we had this kind of threat it was hurricane gloria? is that right? >> that's right. it was gloria back in 185. after that storm, the army corps of engineers built sand dunes and a lorng berm to try to protect the real estate. the mayor is really hopeful that is going to hold. but he's expecting flooding at the southern end of the city. businesses here are preparing, of course. they're taping, they're boarding up, making improvised sandbags and putting them along the doorways in hopes that will help protect their properties. we spoke to one store owner. >> what kind of precautions are you taking? >> we're boarded up downtown. it's all class. now we're sandbagging, hoping for the best. >> this is your economic future. >> this is it, this is our family. >> we're doing everything we can to take care of everything. yep. >> the mayor is optimistic.

just into the cnn newsroom, maryland governor martin o'malley declares a state of emergency in advancerricane irene. irene is on track to slam or at least skim coastal north carolina on saturday and maybe new york city late sunday. our chad myers has the latest facts and figures, of course, and we'll join us live in just a minute. let's go first to cnn's jim spellman in the bahamas where the end of this storm is finally in sight. though, jim, it doesn't look like the weather there has really improved much in nassau. >> reporter: well, you know, it's all comparative. it's a lot better than it was three or four hours ago, and especially the rain has died down, and i think there's a real sense here that the worst is over and that they -- to use their phrase, dodged a bullet. people are dropping by to say hi. people have been out and about and saying they have seen a few downed trees, a few downed power lines here but they were really bracing for some of the worst. some of the southern bahamas islands did get worse, settlements all but destroyed. waiting for word from cat island and eleuth

. >> please, governor o'malley? >> a couple things we have done in maryland is number one, to have a renewable portfolio standard of 20% by 20 to come and that contains within it certain requirements that the utility companies increasingly larger portion of their energy from renewable sources and within that, we have a card out for solar. and that's probably the most important thing that we have done is to create that predictability if you will come and that car felt within the renewables portfolio standard that is starting to inspire larger foot of fuente installations. as far as the broader question of the advanced manufacturing and how we inspire that here in our country, that's an issue that we are all wrestling with right now. but on the demand side, we believe the renewables portfolio standard and the carved out for solar is a way that we can start to see that industry take off in our state. >> governor fortuno? >> if i may add to what governor o'malley had to say in the case of puerto rico for the production,

o'malley returns let him know. >> as you work, north carolina is getting ready to respond.irginia is getting ready for heavy rain. again, we are following this storm literally of the i-95 corridor. the secretary has been in contact with the governors. we have been building the relationship so as we start that response we are not just meeting each other. we are working as a team. >> each conversation i had with the state and local officials, they have confirmed to me that the relationship with fema has been outstanding. interagency cooperation at the federal level has been outstanding. they recognize this is going to be a tough slog igetting to this thing, but it has been outstanding work that all of you have done in preparation. i have not yet heard from many of the region's -- from any of notregion's that we have done our job. we have to make sure with the response and recovery phase that we are just as effective and on top of it. but fortunately, because of the strong relationships that have been formed to we have a good start it is going to be a long -- have been formed.
