[laughter] all that. he took a liking to his personality. so he moved to boston and took an apartment directly across the street from my dad's office so that he could see him almost every day for the remainder of husband life. for the remainder of his life. and when he sometimes felt especially depressed at night, that would happen sometimes rather late at night, his wife would call my father at home, and he wouldn't ask any questions. he'd drive back into the city and maybe spend only 30 minutes chatting with o'neill at his bedside and joking with him. my father could always make his patients smile. and just long enough so that o'neill would have a peaceful sle

o'neill. he served in world war ii on attack transports. when he was commandant he led the coast guard into the korean war. mr. price is the expert on that mission. i got a lot of research material from him in my book. commandant richmond from the mid-1950's to 1962. president eisenhower wanted to merge the u.s. coast guard academy with the u.s. merchant marine academy. the coast guard fought that. they trained and respected the merchant marines. the coast guard asked merchant marine officers to accept commissions in the coast guard reserve, and many did. the coast guard was happy to have their knowledge and skill. captain roland, or commandant roland, he assisted the navy in vietnam. the coast guard patrol boats and crews handled not only patrol boat missions, but explosive loading in that area. roland went to visit coast guardsmen. commandant willard smith, mid 1960's to 1970, he had to facilitate the transition from the coast guard from the treasury department to the department of transportation. the coast guard didn't like that. lyndon

joining me is terry o'neill, president of the national organization for women. terry, it seems to me there are two camps of republicans, some like jeb bush who say we should defund the organization and others who say we need to shut down the government. can you have it both ways? can you say in the modern republican party, defund it but not be willing to shut down the government? >> apparently not. evidently the republican leadership has gone onto a crazy train. there's really something scary, alex, when united states senators, mitch mcconnell included get into bed with the violent fringe of the anti-abortion movement. the folks who put out this video are actually supported and founded by individuals with operation rescue which has a long and sorted history of violent attacks on abortion providers. >> terry, what i don't understand is the war on women line of argument, if you will, so effective in defeating republicans in previous election cycles. you would think that the establishment would do everything in its power to keep the fringe from bringing this up. mi

this year is the board president, patricia o'neil. tell us the biggest change this year has been the later start types. is that good or bad for these students? >> it's wonderful for our students. the american academy of pediatrics and the centers for disease control recommended an 8:30 start time due to fiscal limitations we were only able to push back 20 minutes but our high school students will start at 7:45 and our middle school students at 8:15. our elementary students are starting ten minutes later. >> reporter: that makes a big difference? >> 20 minutes for a high school student, our former start time was 7:25. as you can see it's pretty dark. we had buses already rolling early, early. and so it was as good as we could get it this year. >> reporter: another big change we're seeing a lot of growth. 156,000 kids this year. >> this is the eighth straight year that we've had growth of over 2,000 students. we anticipate 156,500 students walk trying our doors this morning -- walking through our doors this morning. we expect that growt
