o'sullivan: can everyone hear me? ok, good. well first of all, a few stories about how russell kirk came into my life. i visited america when i was a child, six, but i had not lived in america as an adult so i did not -- until i was about 30. i didn't really know a great deal about the american conservative movement. i did try to find out. i went into the u.s. embassy in london to the library and asked could i read a copy of national review. and the librarian was most snippy, saying they didn't carry that kind of publication, thank you very much. when i got my first job after college, it was as a junior tutor. it did a number of things, we used to hold conferences for interested conservatives. we used to hold training courses. my job was to arrange conferences. we had one great advantage, a very good library. so, i walked in one day and there was the conservative mind. and i picked it up and sat down and i must have read it for the next three or four hours. of course i returned to it much later. it was very revealing to me beca

the kind that john o'sullivan has described. it is not simply about politics although it does not exclude politics, either. some of my remarks tonight will emphasize the degree to which russell kirk was engaged in politics in ways that are easily overlooked. you will find that while too few people are unaware of russell kirk to begin with, some people who do have a sense of russell kirk think of him as some sort of fuddy-duddy. a cloistered intellectual who had maybe no friends or interaction with the outside world. andept politics at an arm's leg's length. someone who was disengaged from public life and lived in a swirl of the middle ages and antiquarianism. but he was a conservative at full. he had a great understanding of politics and public policy. in the highest sense, the somatic sense, the philosophical sense, with a deeper and wider historical understanding and philosophical understanding. one of the reasons russell kirk is a figure of such compelling interest right now is because conservatism has become a question mark.
