hurricane lane is now less than 300 miles south of hawaii and hurricane warnings are in effect for maui, oahu, and the big island of hawaii. the storm is expected to weaken as it turns toward hawaii. the wind is still blowing more than 130 miles an hour. heavy rain from the front of the storm continues to fall on the island of hawaii. emergency workers have opened shelters for people in the flood zone. people are being asked to shelter in place until the storm passes. while most people are trying to get away from the storm some scientists flew directly into it. look at this. this is video from a plane outfitted with storm research equipment the crew flew close to the eye of the storm to take a wind, pressure, and temperature measurements. that information is now being used to help figure out where hurricane lane might be headed next and that could help save lives and protect property. >>> 36 first responders from amanda park are in oahu. they packed up their supplies and headed to sfo yesterday. they are in place to help with rescue and recovery efforts. they took about 40,000 pounds of searc

evacuations have been issued for parts of oahu.eporter ray bogan is live from honolulu where the sun is starting to come up. >> reporter: the sun is starting to come up and the wind is pretty calm but finally after this long wait and all of these live shots we have enjoyed together you may finally get the rain you have been waiting for. it is just a drizzle now but we have been looking at the radar and this looks to be it as the rain bands start coming in, it looks like it will be permanent. the governor has put out some warnings including one from yesterday that said in oahu, maui and the big island of hawaii there is a potential for tornadoes. >> it is still expected as a hurricane on friday. the most uncertainty still lies within the weakening trend and torrential rain on the big island of hawaii with some areas getting more than 30 inches of rain. that rain bringing with it heavy flooding, landslides and dangerous surf. many residents are hoping for the best but are not taking any chances. >> it is a gamble with what is coming

wildfires there and heavy rain and expected to move north towards oahu.e point the eye of the storm will veer out to the pacific ocean an oahu. they don't know when the turn will be made. 14 inches of rain on the big island. could be a different story here. a lot of hotels on the beachfront and the mayor said if we get half the rainfall here they got on the big island, that will cause major, major problems. wolf? >> be careful out there. nick watt. thank very much. >>> bringing in our meteorologist jennifer gray. she's in the severe weather center. jennifer, how bad could this get for hawaii? >> reporter: nick is right. depends on that turn. the storm is still headed to the north, straight for the islands. by tomorrow morning we do expect that turn to the west. that's going to make all the difference, depending how soon or late that happens. that will depend on a lot of the impacts for some of the islands. not as far as the rain so much. getting rain anyway. it will make a difference as far as the wind goes. right now winds, 105 miles per hour, gusts 125.
