they're beefing up security at four downtown stations, this wunl here, oakland city, 19th street, west oakd and lake merritt. you might have heard there was a protest planned at 7:00 to 9:00 this morning to protest against recent b.a.r.t. police shootings and to show their solidarity with the general strike that's supposed to be taking place later today. they have since canceled that protest. the reason being is that they figured if they're going to be disrupting service that might be counterproductive because many of the people protesting rely on b.a.r.t. and it would be difficult for them to participate in the general strike. they have called off that general protest that was going to be taking place from 7:00 to 9:00 this morning. b.a.r.t. says they are prepared. they have anticipated larger numbers of people coming out. that's why they're running the longer trains and beefing up security at the four stations i mentioned. as far as the general strike, we understand the first action planned for a couple hours from now. we'll go back up to street side where my colleague christie smith is

oakland yesterday. there was a day long peaceful protest. some 7,000 people poured through oaky yesterday and it culminated with a large protest over at the port of oakland. it was shut down for several hours and just recently has reopened. after they shut down the port of oakland. many protesters, at least a dozen or so came back here to downtown oakland when police say they made a dramatic turn. a handful of protesters became violent according to police. police moved in with riot gear and said they had to throw in tear gas and flash grenades to dispurse a crowd and lighting dumpsters on fire. that led to other acts of vandalism. some of the local businesses here have had windows blown out and completely broken into hundreds of pieces. many of the protesters say this was no indicative of the message they were trying to send that their message has been peaceful. the occupy oakland camp has been here and they have no plans to go anywhere even though the city has already asked them to try to leave more than once. it's been a day of cleanup after the early clash with police. prote
