oakland police saying two chp officers on patrol in east oakland. they spotted suv that had paper plates. the they're saying suddenly, a passenger jumped out with a handgun that was visible to those two chp officers. again, this was around 9:00 last night on wentworth avenue in east oakland. according to police, this was a marked chp canine unit. the canine was deployed and two chp officers chased the man on foot. the canine tangled with the suspect. officers opened fire and the man was shot but so was the police dog. the officers performed cpr on the man but he died at the scene. the canine, though, expected to survive from the gunshot wounds. oakland police are the lead on this and they're saying that a loaded handgun was recovered at that scene. but this morning, they are asking for the public's help looking for the driver of the suv and other passengers inside. this is a silver toyota suv, newer model, with red and white paper plates. reporting live in oakland, chris smith "today in the bay." >> this marks the second deadly shooting involving th

the chp investigating a deadly new years day crash in oakland. it happened just a few hours ago on 580 near park boulevard. tara moriarty is joining us from the crash scene with information from investigators. tara. >> reporter: the driver of the car that overturned had not been drinking. that is what the chp tells us. it happened on the onramp that is blocked off by the chp. that is because a tow truck is now removing the car. the coroner has removed the body. the chp says the accident unfolded at 2:30 this morning. the driver of the white suv veered off 580 westbound and ended up in the park boulevard onramp. the car flipped. the female passenger was killed and the male driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. there are skid marks that go across the dirt barrier that separates the freeway. when we pulled up this morning, an elderly driver sideswiped a chp patrol car. chp told us he had not been drinking either but was just confused and will not be allowed to drive away from the scene. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu

we drove mobile weather up to the oakland hills today. just outside of the oakland zoo. you want to see what an offshore flow looks like? take a look at this. from oakland to san francisco, you can see the beautiful skyline of the city. pristine conditions. all due to a northeast, and east wind up to 15 miles an hour. great visibility. but the air mass is definitely drying out, due to that offshore flow. when we drove up earlier today, we saw this sign that was hoisted by this city of oakland, and it says that the fire danger is high today right here for the hills of oakland. the city of oakland does like to continue to monitor the situation, and alert its neighbors of the high fire danger, because we take you back to 1991. the oakland firestorm that killed 25 people right here in these hills. and damaged, or destroyed thousands and thousands of homes. mind you the conditions were during the autumn months. but nevertheless, very similar to today, where we have very low relative humidity, very gusty eastern winds, and temperatures that are unseasonably mild for this time
